College of Graduate Nursing receives HRSA funding
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) has awarded Western University of Health Sciences’ College of Graduate Nursing $256,526 for the National Faculty Loan Program (NFLP). This is the fourth year that HRSA has provided support to the College of Graduate Nursing. Funds from this award will be used to prepare nurse educators enrolled in the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program.
Excellence in Nursing
The College of Graduate Nursing recently published their 2013 issue of Excellence in Nursing, which highlights student academic and donor awardees, Dean’s List and Who’s Who recipients, as well as other CGN highlights and accomplishments for the 2012/2013 academic year. Check it out!
Call for Preceptors
The College of Graduate Nursing is interested in connecting with alumni who would be willing and are able to precept Family Nurse Practitioner students in their clinical rotations. We are interested in rotations in: Peds, Adult, Geri, Gyn and Obstetrics. Students can come through for 6 weeks or longer in a rotation—depending upon the limitations of the site. (e.g. My primary care clinical site requires a 1 year commitment of weekly sessions so that they benefit from an experienced student after the initial impacted learning curve—but any length of time is fine.) Even urgent care or skilled nursing sites are good for shorter rotations to build student skills and management techniques. At the site, students have to be able to take a history, do an exam, come to a diagnosis and create the management plan (job shadowing is not acceptable—we learn by doing!).
We are a Distance Program college and while the majority of our students are in Southern California, we have many students all across the country. DOs, MDs, NPs and Nurse Midwives have all mentored our students in the past.
Please consider giving back to our health care profession by mentoring those who will follow in your footsteps in the future. Please contact Diana Lithgow at email@example.com if you are able to take a student in your clinical setting for any length of time!
