Gayane Besnelian, PharmD ’01, is the CEO/President/Pharmacist at Arcade Lane Compounding Pharmacy in Pasadena, CA. While in pharmacy school, she was a recipient of the Humanitarian Award by Elli Lilly. Dr. Besnelian serves on annual medical mission trip to Armenia, a humanitarian cause that aims to provide medical services, including medicinal needs to developing towns and villages in Armenia. She holds various certifications specializing in immunizations, diabetes, cholesterol, and medication therapy management. She also received specialized training in compounding with special emphasis in hormone restoration. Dr. Besnelian gives lectures at various institutions about profession of pharmacy and compounding medications. One of her recent talks was on “Sex Hormone Therapy Using Pharmacotherapeutic Compounding Medications” at the 11th Armenian Medical World Congress. She also gave a talk on “Compounding Pharmacy” at Glendale Adventist Hospital, as well as “Pharmacy Career” at Loyola High School to a pre-med group of students.
Nogie Demirjian, PharmD ’13, is featured in a newsletter produced by the Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) about a 16-week advanced research elective he took in the DHS Office of Pharmacy Affairs, where he led a project looking at ways to assess sterile compounding to improve medication safety within DHS hospitals.
Pharmacy Practice and Administration Department faculty members have published a wonderful overview and update on Collaborative Pharmacy Practice. This was an Invited Publication directed to Dr. Law by Integrated Pharmacy Research and Practice (A Dove Press Journal). The CORE (Community Pharmacy Research and Education) faculty members were asked to participate in a “collaborative” attempt at writing this review article. Dr. Fadi Khasawneh has been awarded $416,976 by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute for his project, “Investigation of Platelet G-Protein Coupled Receptors.”
Posters presented by Pharmacy Practice and Administration faculty at the recently held American Diabetes Meeting in Chicago, Ill.:
- Dr. Jonathan Watanabe presented a poster based on work with colleagues at the VA: Mark Bounthavong, PharmD ’04, Timothy Chen, PharmD ’04, and Sunder Mudaliar. “Comparison of adherence levels and ADA lipid goal attainment in a retrospective cohort of veterans.”
- Dr. Olivia Phung presented a poster based on a Merck-funded project co-authored by colleagues at Hartford Hospital. Phung OJ, Sobieraj DM, Engel SS, Rajpathak SN. “Early Dual Therapy is Associated with Improved Glycemia in Type 2 Diabetes: A Meta-Analysis.” This poster was also featured in the Clinical Pearls Guided Audio Poster Tour.
Dr. Janice Hoffman was successful once again in securing a $4,000 Target Case Study Competition grant for “Capturing the growing Pharmacy market.”

Megan Nguyen, PharmD ’00, presented “Managing Resistant Community Acquired Infections” at the annual Western Foot and Ankle Conference, held June 20-23, 2013 in Anaheim, Calif.
Drs. Micah Hata and Emmanuelle Schwartzman are the recipients of a $20,000 Partners in E grant in the amount of $20,000 for the first year of a two-year award. Partners in E was developed as an education and outreach program by the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) with funding by the CA DHHS. The focus of the Partners in E program is to educate and deploy a pharmacy student workforce with the attitudes, knowledge, and skills required to identify and resolve barriers to e-prescribing. Pharmacy students will receive comprehensive classroom instruction on pharmacy informatics and specific e-prescribing issues from school or pharmacy faculty experts.
Dr. Cynthia Jackevicius and her former resident Dr. Noelle deLeon recently published an article that compares the use of Niacin for lowering lipid levels in the U.S. and Canada; prior to the two large trials (2011) that showed questionable outcomes with Niacin. College of Pharmacy student Eva Levbarg, PharmD ’14, received the 2013 Student Leadership Award from the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists. The award was established to recognize the contribution of pharmacy students to CSHP, the pharmacy profession, and local communities. Each year, one student from each of the California schools of pharmacy is eligible to receive this award. Their outstanding activities in pharmacy and/or community service have been exemplary.
