Western University of Health Sciences has recently embarked on a long-range program to enhance its standing as a graduate university with a new commitment to establish a greater research presence as an institution. The establishment of the Graduate College of Biomedical Sciences (GCBS) reflects an institutional commitment to give the University a more prominent role in health-related research and training.
The GCBS was created to train highly skilled and caring biomedical researchers and future practitioners for entry into academia, industry or the medical professions. To that end, the GCBS strives to graduate humanistic professionals who will produce new biomedical knowledge and practice their healthcare professions with a deeper and broader understanding of the dynamic sciences underlying the treatment of patients.
Three individual programs are offered:
- MSBS Program: Emphasizing interdisciplinary study, WesternU's two-year Master of Science in Biomedical Sciences (MSBS) thesis program will expose you to cutting-edge areas of biomedical research and study, including virology, genetics, neurobiology, pharmacology, and biological systems in human disease.
- MSPS Program: WesternU's two-year Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (MSPS) will prepare you to ask salient questions in the pharmaceutical sciences and use your knowledge and research skills in this focused research area. You will become a creative scientific problem solver, whether you work in academia, the pharmaceutical industry, or public or private research. This program is currently administered within the College of Pharmacy. (http://prospective.westernu.edu/pharmaceutical-sciences/curriculum)
- MSMS Program: Our newest program in the GCBS is the Master of Sciences in Medical Sciences (MSMS) Program. This program will prepare qualified pre-health professional students who have obtained a baccalaureate degree in a rigorous inter-professional environment for successful application to professional programs, both external and internal. We are particularly interested in a broad application pool for this program and are welcoming applications from members of groups underrepresented in the health professions.
The College has as its major objectives:
- To provide top quality educational programs in graduate medical sciences to enable graduates to obtain the best career opportunities for themselves, that meet the needs of the State of California and the Western United States; and
- To link medically-relevant educational and medical sciences research programs in a learner-centered environment.
I invite you to explore our web site to learn more about biomedical research, our College and the MSBS, MSMS and MSPS programs.
Sincerely,

Steven J. Henriksen, Ph.D.
Founding Dean, GCBS
