Dr. Bruce Hensel

Dr. Hensel is the Emmy Award-winning Health, Medical and Science Editor for KNBC. His unique abilities, experience and qualifications set him apart from other television medical reporters and have made him one of the leading sources for health information.

Dr. Hensel joined NBC4 in June 1987. At the time, he was already a practicing physician, board-certified in both internal and emergency medicine, and had extensive experience in journalism. He was also the Author of the book Smart Medicine: How to Prevent Medical Mistakes and Get the Most Out of Your Medical Care.

During his tenure with NBC4, Dr. Hensel has provided numerous investigative reports and exclusive stories for the "Channel 4 News" and other NBC news programs. His popular reports and Vlogs can be found on the Dr. Hensel Health page at KNBC.com.

In addition to his duties at NBC4, Dr. Hensel serves as co-director of two emergency rooms in Southern California: Century City Doctors Hospital and San Dimas Community Hospital. He is also a Full Clinical Professor of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA). Dr. Hensel served as the Chief Medical Officer for Dr.Koop.com in the 1990s and became one of the founders of the High Ethics Internet Committee in 1997. From 2004-2007, he hosted "Dr. Hensel's Smart Medicine" on KABC Radio in Los Angeles and also produced two award-winning health documentaries.

His achievements in medical reporting and as a practicing physician have led to a number of honors for Dr. Hensel. He has won local area Emmys for the series "Health Fax" (1988) and the specials "4 Your Health," "Bioterrorism: Lines of Defense" (2001) and "Autism: The Hidden Epidemic" (2005). The Consumers Research Council of America has named him one of America's Top Physicians several times and the City of Los Angeles awarded him a Commendation for 16 Years of Outstanding Contributions and Achievements in Health Care Reporting in 1996. Dr. Hensel was the recipient of the American Diabetes Association Award in 1994. The Greater Los Angeles Affiliate of the American Heart Association honored him with four Outstanding Media Award for his community education efforts and the California Medical Association honored him for Excellence in Health Care Reporting.

Prior to joining NBC4, Dr. Hensel was the medical/health and science advisor for KFWB and was the contributing medical editor at Family Circle Magazine.

Dr. Hensel graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political theory. He studied journalism at UCLA and Columbia University and attended medical school at Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons. He received his internship and residency training at Wadsworth Veterans Administration Hospital and at UCLA.
