About the Event
The East West Scholarship Dinner raises money to provide scholarships each year to WesternU students in graduate nursing, osteopathic medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, physician assistant, optometry, podiatric medicine, dental medicine and veterinary medicine. Applicants from all ethnic backgrounds are selected based on academic excellence, community service and financial need.
This event expands each year, with close to 300 friends of the University continuing to guarantee scholarship support to a diverse group of health care students at WesternU. Annually, health care professionals, physicians, pharmacists, community leaders and business associates representing many parts of the Inland Empire and the San Gabriel Valley attend this event.
To date, more than 300 WesternU students have received awards totaling in excess of $425,000. Past scholarship recipients have gone on to become respected health care professionals, often pursuing their careers in underserved and economically disadvantaged areas.
The mission of the East West Scholarship committee is to provide support in helping our students become competent and compassionate health care professionals and stewards of our communities.

HONORING - Sam Shimomura, PharmD, FCSHP, FASHP
and Celebrating - WesternU Scholarship Recipients
Dr. Sam Shimomura, or “Dr. Sam” as he is referred to by students, alumni and colleagues, received his PharmD in 1970 from UCSF, and immediately joined their faculty. He spent the next 26 years at UCSF, initially in San Francisco, but later as an experiential education coordinator for UCSF in the Los Angeles and Orange County regions (1980 – 1996). He holds an emeritus title from UCSF for his years of outstanding service to that institution. Dr. Sam joined WesternU in 1996 as one of our first faculty in the College of Pharmacy, and, in the 21 years since, he has served as Associate Dean for College Advancement and held a key position in the development of our experiential education programs as well.
From 1989 – 1992, Dr. Sam served on the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP) Board of Directors as president elect, president, and past president. He also served on the Board of Directors of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) from 1999 – 2002. In 1995 he received the CSHP Pharmacist of the Year Award, in 2006, the Distinguished Service Award, and in 2017, he was recognized by the California Society of Health-System Pharmacists (CSHP) with their CSHP Lifetime Honorary Membership Award. This is only the sixteenth time in the 46-year history of CSHP that they have given this award. Dr. Sam is a Fellow of both CSHP and ASHP, and in his 48 years as an educator, mentor, and colleague, Dr. Sam has touched the lives of so many. He has had a truly remarkable impact on pharmacy education and the profession of pharmacy.
"I would like to express my sincere gratitude and appreciation for awarding me the East West Scholarship. I am truly honored to be selected as one of this year’s recipients. Thank you very much for your consideration and generous support."
"I would like to extend my sincerest gratitude for selecting me as a recipient of your scholarship. I hope to use your generous gift towards advancing my career and eventually giving back to the community just as you have."
"Your support of WesternU students truly makes a difference in our lives, as many of us feel overwhelmed with student loans and other expenses that accumulate while in school. I personally cannot express my gratitude enough and I thank you for support as I pursue my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree."
