In class instruction
Librarians partner with many faculty members as guest lecturers in their courses.
Subjects that librarians currently teach in-class include:
- Copyright – What is Copyright, Fair Use, consequences of violating Copyright
- EndNote – How to download, create libraries, use Cite While You Write
- Evidence-Based Practice – What is Evidence-Based Practice, steps of EBP, background/foreground questions, PICO, levels of evidence
- Health Literacy – What is health literacy, how to communicate with your patients, teach back method
- Library Resources & Searching (College Specific) – How to use various library resources (AccessMedicine, Embase, Lexi-Comp, Micromedex, Natural Standard, Nursing@Ovid, PubMed, Reference Sight, etc.; print books)
- Mobile Apps – What are mobile apps, app recommendations, library provided apps
- Plagiarism – What is plagiarism, examples, how to avoid it
- Public Speaking – Important points when preparing and giving a speech
- Research Design – Design methodologies
- Research Process – How to research, staying organized, resources to use, Rule of 20
- Staying Current with the Literature – Search alerts, RSS feeds, Table of Contents and journal updates
- Website Evaluation – How to identify credible websites

CAPE workshops
The library has partnered with CAPE to offer workshops for faculty development.

- EndNote – How to download, create libraries, use Cite While You Write, modify citations
- Library Resources and Searching (PubMed, embase, etc)
- Staying Current with the Literature/Citation alerts – Search alerts, RSS feeds, Table of Contents and journal updates, MyNCBI
- Using images in presentations – Which resources to use to find images, license agreements, citing, compressing files
Library workshops
Librarians teach and host a variety of workshops. Workshops may be offered online or in person.
General topics include, but are not limited to:
- DDx Resources – Featuring Diagnosaurus in AccessMedicine, Visual Dx, and DiagnosisPro
- Drug Information Resources – Featuring Lexi-Comp, Micromedex, and Natural Standard
- Effective studying (partnering with the LEAD office) – Strategies based on learning theory to help you study, relax, and control stress while at WesternU
- Evidence Based Medicine Resources – Featuring DynaMed, Cochrane, Dare, National Guideline Clearinghouse, and PubMed
- How do I find…? – An overview of the library’s website, how to get to the most used pages and features
- Mobile Apps – What are mobile apps, app recommendations, library provided apps
