DOS Requirements for J-1 Health Insurance

Important – please read carefully.

All J-1 visiting scholars and their J-2 dependents are required to maintain health and accident insurance coverage during the entire time the J-1 & J-2(s) are in the United States as required by the Department of State (DoS)/Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The DoS specifications below are required:

Any insurance policy secured to fulfill the above requirements, must be underwritten by:

Insurance coverage backed by the full faith and credit of the government of the International Scholar’s home country shall be deemed to meet the requirement.

An International Scholar who willfully fails to maintain the insurance coverage as set forth or who makes a material misrepresentation to the sponsor regarding the coverage will be considered to be in violation of the USIA regulations and will be subject to termination as a J-1Program participant. It is your responsibility, not Western University of Health Sciences’s, to obtain and maintain insurance coverage. International Scholars, during the employee benefits orientation, will sign a statement that they understand and intend to comply with the medical insurance requirement.

If you have medical insurance from your home country, you must bring a written statement from your insurance carrier in English showing that your insurance meets the U.S. Department of State (DOS), Homeland Security (DHS) requirements for J-1 International Scholars.

BETA – Basic Emergency Travel Assistance Insurance Plan

J-1 Employees & J-2 Dependents

The University provides the BETA Insurance Plan for J-1 international scholars and their J-2 dependents. If you are a J-1 exchange visitor being paid by WesternU, you may be eligible for the BETA Insurance Plan.  The University pays for the BETA insurance, however,  BETA insurance must be supplemented by one of the University’s medical insurance plans, BLUE SHIELD or KAISER offered at a minimal cost to J-1 employees.

Visiting Scholars who are not WesternU employees

In accordance with DoS/DHS regulations, proof of medical insurance (in ENGLISH) is required for all J-1 visiting scholars and their J-2 dependents while in the U. S.  Evidence of health insurance must be received prior to entering the United States.  Please send your health insurance documentation to J-1Program@westernu.edu


All scholars are required by law to have full health insurance coverage in effect for them and their dependents for the entire duration of their program.
