Current Clinical Trial Projects

Dear Horse Owners/Trainers/Farriers,

I am writing to ask for your assistance with an equine podiatry research project.  I am conducting a study on the composition of the digital cushion in young foals. In the unfortunate event that one of your foals must be euthanized, I would greatly appreciate it if you could send us the feet for our study. It might facilitate to inform your veterinarian and we would be happy to work with your vet to get the feet with your permission. To recognize your time and generosity, I will provide $150 as an incentive for your participation.

We would prefer to receive all 4 feet; however, the front feet are most critical. The feet should be severed at fetlock level, kept in a fridge/cooler or a freezer, and shipped overnight (I will pay shipping costs). If you are close to Pomona, I can come to you and pick them up at your convenience.

We need the age, breed, gender, and, if possible, cause of death. All information will be kept confidential.  Samples should be collected from foals younger than one year of age (0-12 months).

Summary:

  • Required: four feet from foals 0-12 months of age cut at the fetlock level
  • Keep frozen and shipped (shipping costs covered) or picked up by researchers
  • $150 incentive per set

This research is a continuation of a study on the composition and functional properties of the digital cushion in adult horses. The first study has been reviewed, accepted, and presented at prestigious conferences including ACVS and AAEP. The abstracts are available in the conference proceedings, but I would be glad to send you a copy. A copy is also available on Dr. Faramarzi Laboratory webpage as well. http://www.westernu.edu/faramarzi/clinicaltrials.html

I greatly appreciate your assistance with this important research. Please contact me should you have any questions.  Thank you.

Response to Acupuncture in Horses with Chronic Laminitis

During 2015-2016 we studied the effect of acupuncture on 15 horses with a history of chronic laminitis. Our preliminary results showed significant improvement. We greatly appreciate participating horse owners and the American Holistic Veterinary Medicine Foundation for supporting this.

Few examples of Horse Owners’ Testimonies:

I just wanted to let you know how happy I am with the results of acupuncture on my horse Dusty. After his two treatments, he is definitely moving more freely with less pain. I am really happy with the treatment! Thank you so much! Karen Davis & Dusty, Chino Hills, CA

We are very pleased with the results of the acupuncture treatments given to our horse A.B.C. Me Gone as part of Dr. Faramarzi's Laminitis Research study. Dr. Faramarzi and his colleagues did a great job. Andrew and Kim, Acton, CA

The entire team was professional, clear in the procedures being performed, and very thorough in both the acupuncture process, and explaining the monitoring equipment which is placed on the horse that measures the degree of lameness very precisely. I feel privileged to get this level of care for my horse at no cost to myself, and am grateful that she qualified to be in the study! Thanks to the whole team! Sandra Osmond, Burbank, CA

“We had the opportunity to participate in Dr. Faramarzi’s study. We treated 6 horses all in different stages of laminitis. While we are very familiar with acupuncture on our show horses we have never targeted just the front feet on these type of horses. The results varied but were amazing to watch all the horses improved 3 of them showed dramatic improvement and continue to improve. The study was ran with professionalism and extreme detail. I would gladly participate in future studies that are conducted by Dr. Faramarzi”. Glynis Snowden Trainer Glyn-Rae Inc. Jamul, CA.
