Presently there are two types of global health programs at WesternU:
Fourth Year International Elective Rotations.
Currently about 20-30 students annually rotate in several foreign sites approved by the GHEC (Global Health Education consortium), other CGCH approved sites with organizations such as CFHI- sites in India, Africa and Latin America; Ecuador (Dr. Vedemeyer) ;Tanzania through USC; IFMSA ; Peru and Kenya (Dr. Kachani). The CGCH is in the process of establishing “permanent” sites in Puerto Rico, Argentina, Honduras, Malaysia, India and Vietnam. These sites require a WesternU faculty member to have educational, clinical or research affiliation with another institution of higher learning. These faculty members will serve as faculty advisors (Program Directors) to organize pre-departure activities, help in onsite curriculum and oversee activities. Each program director from a particular college will be responsible for defining specific goals and objectives and the grading of the participating students. The faculty member will be responsible for the completion of all the requirements such as the application, safety and travel documents as stated in the CGCH Handbook .The CGCH will help in providing the names of the approved sites (listed below), and will approve the applicant after satisfactory review of the application, safety, and travel documents. The purpose of the CGCH review and approval is to not only assure the applicants’ activities will support the mission, vision, and goals of WesternU and the CGCH, but also to maximize the safety and security of the applicants during their time abroad.
Second Year Summer student experiences abroad.These fall into 2 categories:
• University sponsored:
Students arrange summer opportunities through CGCH approved sites (usually developing countries). Student activities will be supervised and coordinated, preferably, by a clinical faculty member. Students and faculty will follow guidelines established by the CGCH, Student Affairs, and Risk Management.
• Non-University sponsored:
Students may choose to participate in a global outreach event through an institution or program other than WesternU. These activities are not sponsored by WesternU. Participating WesternU faculty will NOT be officially approved by their respective colleges to supervise non-university sponsored events. Participating faculty should consider this type of activity as independent activity and will be counted as use of their vacation time. Students who participate cannot use any funds through a class/club/SGA to reimburse any portion of travel expense nor can the event be advertised through any official university program. All students and faculty who participate in non-university sponsored outreach programs must secure all their own arrangements and will travel at their own risk.
International Travel Approval Statement from Student Affairs
If your club/class wishes to coordinate an international trip, the trip must be approved by two entities. First you must present your plans to the Center for Global and Community Health committee. Then, if the trip involves any kind of medical care, health screenings, health exams, etc. you must also request approval through University Student Affairs by submitting the Health Screening and Physical Exams Approval Form as you would for a domestic event.
If a particular trip is not approved by both of these entities it cannot be advertised, nor can any funds in a club/class/SGA etc. account be used to reimburse any portion of travel expenses. International travel that has not been approved by the university is considered completely independent of WesternU.

Child Family Health International (CFHi)
Child Family Health International (CFHI) is the leading nongovernmental organization (NGO) placing health science students on global health education programs in ways that are socially responsible and financially just. We model best global health education practices which demonstrate a priority commitment to community engagement and local integrity. CFHI is an NGO in Special Consultative Status with the ECOSOC of the United Nations. CFHi has many Global Health Education Programs, Professional Development Programs and Community Health Initiatives in Bolivia, Ecuador, India, Mexico, USA and South Africa.

Interhealth South America
The Interhealth South America study and service program is an integrated onsite introduction to Ecuadorian and South American primary, community, and public health and healthcare for North American medical students and resident physicians. In addition, emphasis is placed on medical Spanish language acquisition, with practical skills development in patient interviewing and examination in Spanish. The principal format of the program provides structured group and individual field experiences in international health, coordinated with medical language immersion study.

Tropical Disease Institute (TDI)
The Tropical Disease Institute at Ohio University seeks to improve the health status of underserved populations through sustainable and comprehensive research, service and educational inititatives related to infectious diseases. Since its initiation in 1987, TDI faculty have provided training to students from the USA and developing countries at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The Institute's education abroad programs were initiated in 1995. Ever since then, more than 180 students from more than 20 universities in the USA, Europe, New Zealand and other countries have participated in the workshops and research training programs carried out in Ecuador.
