Physician and Society I

The goal of the Physician and Society (PAS I) course is to establish for the student a foundation for learning the importance of patient-centered care, patient safety and the prevention of medical errors. The course will begin with students exploring ways of achieving optimum personal health by practicing a healthy lifestyle including good nutrition, adequate exercise, and stress management throughout their medical school and professional careers. This personal knowledge and commitment to healthy living is meant to train physicians to act as role models for their patients and the public. The course will continue with the study of the history of medicine, types of cultures and past healing traditions, including Western and Asian medicine. An overview of the different types of healthcare providers, the ethical principles of practice and the role of cultural preferences that patients may have for their care will be presented. Course instructors will stress the importance of professional leadership, interprofessional education, and effective communication. The course will conclude with the study of decision-making processes, evidence-based practice and physician-patient collaboration.
