Dr Castro held academic/clinical appointments at several institutions including; UCLA School of Medicine, Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, University of Illinois at Chicago Medical Center (where she was the Director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine Fellowship Training Program), and St. Joseph's Medical Center (in Chicago, IL where she was the Chief of Maternal-Fetal Medicine).

Dr. Castro has been the recipient of several awards and grants, including grants from the March of Dimes Birth Defects Foundationand the United Cerebral Palsy Association. She is Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine and is a member of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the Association of Professors of Gynecology and Obstetrics, the Society of Gynecologic Investigation and the Society of Maternal-Fetal Medicine. She is married to Dr. Robert Avina, MD who is a faculty member in the department of Family Medicine at Loma Linda University Medical Center. They have three sons-Jason, Jeffrey and Daniel.
