College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP)

Michelle Emmert, EdD
Assistant Dean, COMP Student Affairs

I can help you: minimize the impact of the challenges life throws at you during medical school. Much of my time is spent assisting students who are dealing with life experiences that are impacting their academics; titrating medications for ADD/mental health, death of a family member, relationship challenges, caring for a sick parent etc. I can help if you are willing to share with me! The COMP Office of Student Affairs is also responsible for facilitating orientation, granting excused absences, Student Performance Committee, professional development, large scale student events and more. Please see the COMP Office of Student Affairs photo directory for details.

Favorite part of my job: I love helping students problem solve when they are facing a new challenge! Whether it's struggling to keep up academically, dealing with a difficult emotional situation, or figuring out how to handle an interpersonal conflict I will help you to think through the issue and determine the best approach for tackling the problem. I see my role as not simply giving you the answer, but helping you learn how to think through things so that you are better equipped to handle similar situations in the future! It's incredibly rewarding to watch my students learn and grow personally as they progress through the curriculum – and then to watch them graduate... priceless!

Best advice: While class and study time are paramount to your success, so is leading a balanced life. Even if it's only an hour or two a week, find time to exercise, spend quality time with family/friends/significant others, satisfy your spiritual needs, enjoy one of your hobbies or something else that you enjoy! I also cannot stress enough the need to reach out to your advisor, me or another faculty member if you're struggling - we can help!

During the academic year, I am here to assist you with any problems, both personal and academic, that you might encounter. I am a resource for any questions you might have about anything, if I don't know the answer, I can find out or point you in the right direction. Above all else, I am here to help you succeed in the pharmacy program.

Favorite part of my job: Students make my job exciting! There aren't two days that are ever the same because students come to my office with different issues or problems to deal with or solve. I also like those days when they come to my office just to say hello, talk about what is going on in their lives, or we just have a good laugh over something.

Best advice: RELAX!!! I know there is a lot of excitement and anxiety about starting a professional graduate program. Remember we want to see you succeed just as much as you do. We're here to help and we'll do everything we can to help you become a professional and competent pharmacist.
