The results of biomedical research are always in the news, even in these troubling economic times. In a crucial step to expand resources available for genetic therapy research, scientists at the University of Connecticut have announced a breakthrough in the creation of human embryonic stem cell (hESC) lines. Elsewhere, Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical used to strengthen a variety of containers used for food products appears to persist in the human body longer than researchers had previously believed. And in San Francisco, a family had their pet Labrador successfully cloned by the biotech company Bioarts International. Finally, the neurotransmitter serotonin, made famous with the introduction of antidepressant drugs like Prozac and Zoloft, appears to trigger a change in Schistocerca gregaria grasshoppers that transforms them from mild-mannered solitary bugs into swarming, aggressive crop eaters. The change is both behavioral and physiological, and is so complete that the two versions at one time were thought to be separate species.
