DPTE Alumni Newsletter Information for August 2007

Welcome to Dee Schilling, PT, PhD, who assumed the role of Chair for the Department of Physical Therapy Education on August 1, 2007. Dr. Schilling brings a wealth of experience in teaching, research, consultation and community and professional service. She received her PhD in Special Education and an MS in Rehabilitation Medicine from the University of Washington, a Certificate in Physical Therapy from Emory University, and a BS in Education and Certificate in Corrective Therapy from Kent State University. Dr. Schilling taught at the masters and doctoral levels in the areas of pediatric, motor learning, professional behaviors and research in the Department of Physical Therapy Education at SUNY, Upstate Medical University, in Syracuse, New York.

Georgeanne Vlad, PT, MA, having served as the Interim Chair since July 2006, was appointed Associate Chair and also continues in her role as the Director of Clinical Education.
Congratulations to faculty member, Dayle Armstrong, PT, MS, DPT, who completed her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in July 2007 from Western University.
Congratulations to faculty members, Sandy Stuckey, PT, MA, PhD and Dayle Armstrong, PT, MS, DPT, both of whom received promotions to the rank of Associate Professor effective July 2007.
Congratulations to Sonya Huizar, DPT Class of 2007, who was one of 11 physical therapist professional education students selected nationwide to receive the 2007 Minority Scholarship Award for Academic Excellence. The award, created in 1988, acknowledges and rewards academic excellence, demonstrated concerns for minority issues, and the potential for superior professional achievements. Sonya was accompanied by her mother and her faculty advisor, Dr. Sandy Stuckey, at the Recognition Ceremony on June 29 which was part of the Annual Conference of the American Physical Therapy Association held in Denver.
Charles M. Magistro, PT, FAPTA, DSc (Hon), DPT (Hon) served as the physical therapy speaker at the White Coat Ceremony for the incoming DPT Class of 2010. A visionary leader and active member of our profession for 60 years, Dr. Magistro spoke on the importance of early and continued involvement in the professional organization. As former President of both the APTA and the California Chapter of the APTA, Dr. Magistro was a distinguished guest and role model.
Mark your calendar for the Western University Alumni Reception at the Annual Meeting of the California Physical Therapy Association to be held Friday, September 28 at the LAX Hilton Hotel. 2007 is the 15th anniversary of the Department of Physical Therapy Education and we are planning a celebration. Save the date, Saturday, October 27, and watch for more details.

CSM 2007


The American Board of Physical Therapy Specialties (ABPTS) held a Ceremony for Recognition of Clinical Specialties as part of the opening ceremonies on February 14, 2007 at the Annual Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) of the American Physical Therapy Association. Over 6,000 physical therapy professionals registered for the four-day conference which was held this year in Boston.

The following persons are among the 802 Physical Therapists nationwide in 2006 who met the requirements of the ABPTS and have attained certification as clinical specialists in their respective practice areas. They are all graduates of either the entry-level Masters of Physical Therapy or Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy Program at Western University of Health Sciences. Congratulations on such an accomplishment and a distinction well deserved!
