Welcome to Our New Faculty Online Orientation!

I welcome you on behalf of Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU), one of America's leading universities that is admired for its vision, education, and innovation.

I am so enthusiastic that you have chosen WesternU to become your career choice as a faculty member. In order to make your experience at WesternU as rewarding as possible, we provide you with the following online orientation information. We recommend that you browse through all materials found on the orientation website as they relate to your role so you can be prepared to make the most of the exciting challenges and opportunities ahead for you as a new faculty member at our innovative institution. We wish to facilitate your successful transition into becoming a highly effective facilitator of student learning and innovative researcher.

WesternU was founded in 1977 by Dr. Philip Pumerantz, who moved from Chicago to California to start the new college of osteopathic medicine in the western United States and serve as founding president. In October, 1978, the charter class of the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific (COMP) began with 36 members and provisional accreditation. In 1982, when the charter class graduated, COMP was fully accredited.

The Pomona campus of WesternU has been expanded and now consists of five colleges: College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific; the College of Allied Health Professions; the College of Pharmacy; the College of Graduate Nursing; and the College of Veterinary Medicine. In 2009, WesternU will open four new colleges to include the College of Optometry, College of Dental Medicine, College of Podiatric Medicine and College of Graduate Biomedical Sciences. A College of Public Health is planned for the future. WesternU's educational philosophy focuses on the preparation of highly skilled health care professionals who are compassionate and humanistic caregivers. Curricula in all programs include courses on communication, psychosocial aspects of patient care and professional and personal development. Faculty, staff, students, administrators, alumni and supporters refer often to the "WesternU Family," reflecting the caring, nurturing campus environment that is fostered and infused into every aspect of WesternU. In 2009, WesternU will implement its Interprofessional Education Initiative (IPE) through the integration of this innovative and dynamic approach into the didactic and clinical cuirriculum. The IPE will engage health profession students from all of WesternU's health care disciplines in an experiential setting that encourages team-based learning and training in a variety of educational venues.
