Independent Living Research Utilization
ILRU, founded in 1975, has a long history of providing research, education and consultation in the areas of independent living, the Americans with Disabilities Act, home and community based services and health issues for people with disabilities. ILRU seeks to answer questions such as:
- Can health care facilities refer a patient or client with a disability to another practitioner solely because the other practitioner is familiar with the patient's type of disability?
- How can a health care facility determine whether its premises are accessible to people who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices? What steps must they take to provide access?
- What assistance must health care facilities provide for patients and clients who use wheelchairs or other mobility devices to ensure equal and effective treatment and services?

The U.S. Access Board
The Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board is a federal agency which develops minimum guidelines and requirements for standards issued under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA); develops accessibility guidelines for telecommunications equipment and customer premises equipment under the Telecommunications Act; develops accessibility standards for electronic and information technology under Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act; provides technical assistance on those guidelines and standards; and enforces the Architectural Barriers Act. The Board was created under Section 502 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 to enforce the Architectural Barriers Act. The Board also has responsibilities under the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Telecommunications Act of 1996 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. The site includes:
