 Educating Health Professionals on Disability IssuesA Provider's Guide for the Care of Women with Physical Disabilities & Chronic Medical ConditionsThis guide, originally written by Dr. Sandra Welner, has been updated by Suzanne C. Smeltzer, RN, EdD, FAAN and Nancy C. Sharts-Hopko, RN, PhD, FAAN. The guide is designed for clinicians to improve their knowledge and practice in providing care to women with physical disabilities and chronic health conditions. It includes information on access to general medical care, removing common barriers, comprehensive reproductive health care and health promotion and wellness. The first centers on physicians who withhold medical and rehabilitative services because of personal biases or misinformation. The second arises from health care providers who lack awareness of underlying causes that have a persistent influence on the health and wellbeing of severely disabled individuals. In both cases, the end result is that people with disabilities, particularly the severely disabled, often do not receive adequate care or important information to make informed decisions to guide their care and live independently." Interpreter Program Makes health care more accessible to people who are deaf - at the Promotes academic research into disability issues and mass media. This includes issues related to portrayals, hiring practices, technology, civil rights, etc. Promotes architectural, communication, and attitudinal accessibility for people with disabilities at AEJMC annual meetings and all AEJMC activities. Promotes equal treatment and the necessary accommodation for students and professors with disabilities in university settings as outlined in the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. Appropriate accommodation can mean an enhanced learning environment for both students and faculty. Partners in Health Care: People with Disabilities & Their Health Care Providers This brochure is filled with tips for health care providers in promoting the health of people with cognitive and physical disabilities. Suggestions are given for people with disabilities on ways to help build positive partnerships with their medical care providers. Removing Barriers to Health Care: A Guide for Health Professionals This booklet, developed by NCODH and the Center for Universal Design at N.C. State University, walks the health care provider through the process of making a medical facility physically accessible. It is complete with specific ADA requirements, picture illustrations, and some helpful tips on creating accessible environments and services.
