Enabling Students to Deal With the Disabled
By Mike Mitka, Journal of the American Medical Association, 1999;281:595-596

Enhancing Medical Students' Knowledge about Those Who Live With Disabilities
"Both the research literature and our surveys among disabled individuals point to two key gaps in the medical care of severely disabled individuals. The first centers on physicians who withhold medical and rehabilitative services because of personal biases or misinformation. The second arises from health care providers who lack awareness of underlying causes that have a persistent influence on the health and wellbeing of severely disabled individuals. In both cases, the end result is that people with disabilities, particularly the severely disabled, often do not receive adequate care or important information to make informed decisions to guide their care and live independently."
