The College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific offers Service Learning as an integral part of its medical school curriculum. Service learning is a teaching and learning strategy that combines meaningful community service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civic responsibility, and strengthen communities. Goals of Service Learning
For student doctors, it is hands-on learning which contributes to their seeing themselves as responsible and caring future physicians that stay connected with their community. They seek to achieve real objectives for the community and deeper understanding and skills for themselves. Our goals for this course are to:
-
Integrate services that address community-identified needs within the context of the didactic material presented in the classroom.
-
Address complex community health problems in complex settings rather than simplified problems in isolation.
-
Support social, emotional and cognitive learning and development.
-
Involve cooperative rather than competitive experiences that promote skills associated with teamwork and community involvement.
