Student Services (BanWeb)

Student records. Through its BanWeb system, IT maintains the database which supports academic records for all WesternU students. This program allows students to view grades and transcripts, review tuition fees and payments, and update their contact information. Online registraton. Students can also use the Banweb system to register for courses and view related fees. For more information, see the Student Services Menu of BanWeb (requires login)

Financial aid services. Through BanWeb, students can apply for financial aid and check the status of their financial aid applications. Housing services. IT maintains a searchable database of available rental properties and individuals seeking roommates in the Pomona area. A roommate request form is also available. For more information, see the Student Services Menu of BanWeb (requires login)

Case Logs and Clinical Rotations. For selected programs, IT also provides online tools for managing case logs and selecting clinical rotation sites. For more information, see the Student Services Menu of BanWeb (requires login)
Computer Configuration and Support
- Laptop and computer configuration, troubleshooting, and repair. IT's Help Desk provides technical assistance to students, staff and faculty by phone (909-469-5432) or email (techsupport@westernu.edu) request. Walk-in support is also available between 7:30 am and 5:30 pm in the basement of the Pumerantz Library building. An answering service is available to receive technical support calls after business hours and on weekends. Note that only server or system related emergencies will be responded to during non-business hours; all other calls will receive a reply or be scheduled the next business day.
- Hardware and software discounts. As a WesternU student or employee, you can take advantage of discounts on the purchase of cell phones, computer equipment and software. For details, see our Discounts page.
- Printer support. IT maintains high speed, high volume black and white and color printers in the student commons, the library and select classrooms for use by university students and employees. Instructions for using these printers can be found on our Tutorials on Campus Printers page.
Network and Systems Maintenance

Network installations and upgrades. As new buildings are constructed and educational programs are added, IT's Network Operations staff oversees the installation, upgrade and maintenance of new network and telecommunications equipment to accommodate expanding information management needs. Network performance management. Our network administrators continually monitor the performance of the university network to ensure that bandwidth is optimized for the benefit of all university personnel. Account generation and maintenance. The Network Operations staff generates network and email accounts for all WesternU students and employees. While you can change your password at any time, you must contact Technical Support at (909) 469-5432 or techsupport@westernu.edu if your name has changed and your account needs to be updated accordingly.

Software upgrades. The NetOps staff use our monthly maintenance window to perform maintenance on the university servers. During that time key services must be temporarily interrupted so we can delete unwanted files, install new software, and adjust network performance to meet changing needs. Data backup and storage. All data files on network servers are updated nightly. In addition, IT has established contingency measures to protect against the loss of critical data in the event of accidental deletion or a natural disaster. Virus Protection. IT requires all members of the university community to have virus protection software installed on their computers. If you do not have such software, contact Technical Support at (909) 469-5432 or techsupport@westernu.edu and they will install it for you free of charge.

Spam Firewall. Our Spam Firewall uses a variety of technologies to detect and filter spam and viruses for all westernu email accounts. For more information, see Spam Firewall.

Wireless system. Our NewOps staff also maintains the university's wireless network, which is available at selected locations on campus (HPC Student Commons, AMP II, HSC commons, and the Library. For more information, contact Technical Support at (909) 469-5432 or techsupport@westernu.edu.
Digital Communication
- Email. Network Operations oversees the creation and management of all WesternU email accounts, as well as the use of the on-campus Outlook and Internet-based Web Outlook software. - Calendars. IT provides online tools for keeping specific groups and the campus community at large informed of events of interest to WesternU students, faculty and staff. - Room Scheduling. Through its Resource Scheduling software, IT enables selected students, faculty and staff (resource schedulers) to reserve rooms and facilities for meetings and special events. - Office phones, cell phones and PDAs. NetOps oversees the use and maintenance of the university telephone system, and all university issued cell phones and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). Information on the use of the Audix Telephone System may be found in the Telecommunications area of the university Intranet. - Digital Signage. IT oversees the installation and use of digital message screens used in the library and other locations on campus. Approved requsts for posting announcements and other kinds of information on digital message screens should be directed to Technical Support at (909) 469-5432 or techsupport@westernu.edu. Online Learning (Blackboard)

Management of Blackboard. The Instructional Technology/Distributed Learning (ITDL) staff collaborates with representatives in each college (Blackboard Program Coordinators) to manages the Blackboard Course Management system for the university. Services include course design consultation, account creation and enrollment, system maintenance and upgrades, and user support. Classroom Support
- Audiovisual installations, upgrades, and maintenance. Our Classroom Multimedia Services (CMS) staff oversees the installation of new and improved audiovisual equipment in the lecture halls and classrooms. They also conduct routine maintenance to ensure the podiums, screens, and projectors in each classroom are in good working order, and repair or replace old or defective equipment as the need arises. - Classroom podium training and support. The CMS staff provides new and continuing faculty with instruction in the use of the classroom podiums, which control the audiovisual equipment used in lecture presentations. CMS also trains and works with students in each college (Student AV Representatives) to provide technical support for classroom presenters. - Remote AV equipment checkout. Faculty, staff, and students can also check out selected audiovisual equipment for remote University-sponsored presentations, recording events, and other University uses. Reservations can be made by contacting contact Technical Support at (909) 469-5432 or techsupport@westernu.edu or submitted through the Multimedia Request form available on the university Intranet (available on campus only).
- Management of lecture capture system. Our CMS staff also manages the Apreso/Echo360 lecture capture system being used by selected programs on campus. This system enables faculty to record lecture presentations and make them available for students to download and review at a later date. - Classroom response systems. CMS makes electronic classroom response systems available for lectures and other presentations where it is is important to capture student input on surveys, polls, and lecture-based questions. The hand-held response devices capture individual student feedback which can be aggregated, statistically analyzed, and displayed. Multimedia Production

Photography. Classroom and Multimedia Support (CMS) provides photography services for covering campus events, providing images for the university Web site, and for publications such as marketing brochures and the student yearbook. Graphics design. IT provides graphic design and 3D modeling for use on Web sites and stand-alone multimedia products. We also consult with faculty and students on the development and use of PowerPoint, Flash, and other graphic presentation software. Scanning and duplication. While many of the photocopy machines on campus have scanning capabilities, the CMS staff also assists faculty, staff and students with routine scanning of documents, images and other non-digital materials. We can also provide high speed duplication of audio and video materials using CD or DVD formats. Special printing services. CMS maintains a large format printer to assist with the printing of large, poster-size materials for presentations and displays. Multimedia product development. CMS staff work with student, faculty and administration to produce multimedia products for informational, educational, and marketing purposes. Technologies we can draw on in the development of such products include Flash, 3-D animation, digital video and audio, and HTML coding for Web-based distribution. Web Site Development and Maintenance

University Web site development and maintenance. Our Instructional Technology/Distributed Learning (ITDL) staff works with representatives in each college and office (Web Content Administrators) to maintain the university Web site and build new pages when needed. Users are encouraged to comment on the site using the online Website Feedback form. Requests for new pages or specific modifications to the site should be emailed to Technical support at techsupport@westernu.edu or submitted through the Web Change Request form available on the university Intranet (available on campus only).

Student Web site hosting. In addition to maintaining the university's Web site, IT hosts special Web pages for clubs, events, and class functions. Requests must be approved by the College dean or representative, and submitted by email to Technical support at techsupport@westernu.edu.

Special Purpose Web sites. ITDL also builds and supports special purpose Web sites that are created outside of the university Web page directory structure. These include the Classified Ads, the WesternU Photo Store, the Policies & Procedures site, and various continuing education and program recruitment sites. Digital Asset Management. ITDL maintains an archive of WesternU images in its Canto Digital Management System. The site can be used by authorized WesternU faculty and staff to search for specific images related to the university community, including specific events. Marketing and Administrative Support
- Email marketing and metrics. IT collaborates with Student Affairs staff to develop email marketing campaigns and measure their success. Using tools such as TargetX and Webtrends, IT is able to track students responses to different kinds of email messages and provide feedback for future recruitment efforts. - Web advertising. IT also helps colleges plan and implement strategies for Web advertising, using tools such as GoogleAds. We can assist with identifying appropriate key words for online searches, writing Web advertisement copy, and estimating/tracking the resources needed to support Web advertising campaigns. - Productivity tools. Programmers in our Instructional Technology and Distributed Learning (ITDL) unit are skilled at developing Web-based forms and other data collection tools, online scheduling, and providing the custom programming necessary to meet the business and instructional needs of the campus. - Document Imaging. IT oversees the installation and training of university personnel using our NOLIJ Document Imaging software, which provides the digital document storage and archiving services required to transition to a paperless university. - Workflow management. Our IT staff oversees the use of the workflow management software used to provide paperless solutions to complex work processes. Using this software, important documents can be automatically routed to appropriate personnel for approval or follow-up, saving time and resources. - Information systems management. Our Banner group also provides access to the vast array of business data and services required to manage the business of the university. Working closely with various business offices on campus, Banner staff assist in the management of student grades, employee records, budgets, payroll, purchase requisitions, and numerous other business processes. Orientation and Training

New student orientation. All units of IT participate in the orientation of new students during Orientation Week, and on an as needed basis thereafter. During these orientations, students are introduced to the technologies they will be using during their stay here, and how to find assistance when they need it. New faculty/staff training. All newly hired employees receive an orientation to WesternU and the information technologies we use here. Depending on their role, new hires may receive additional training in Blackboard, Banner or other systems that they are required to use in their job. Education Scholar. As a special perquisite for WesternU faculty, IT collaborates with the Center for Academic and Professional Enhancement (CAPE) to make its online faculty development program available to interested instructors. For more information visit the Education Scholar Web page.
- Ongoing staff development. WesternU faculty and staff may also take advantage of any of the numerous technology workshops IT conducts during the school year. For more information, see CAPE's Workshop Registration page.
- Employee training lab. IT maintains an employee training facility located behind the Subway at the corner of Gibbs and Second Street. The Lab includes presentation hardware and computer workstations for 18 participants. Use of the Lab is reserved through the Resource Scheduling software on the university Intranet (on-campus only).

Online training resources. IT maintains an extensive collection of tutorials and support documentation for students and faculty in the Tutorials area of the Computing Resources Web site.
