American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Grants, Scholarships and Awards

Welch Scholars Grant (formally the Foundation Scholars Grant)

In October 2002, the Foundation Scholars Grant was renamed the Welch Scholars Grant in honor of Sterling Welch, DO for his outstanding generosity to the Foundation and his desire to support osteopathic medical students. This grant was originally established in 2001 to provide monetary aid to students entering their second, their or fourth year of studies at an accredited college/school of osteopathic medicine. Special emphasis will be placed on the financial need and academic achievement of the student. The goal of this grant is to promote education within the osteopathic profession. Grants of $2,000 will be awarded to students from each of he colleges/schools of osteopathic medicine who best meet the criteria and have a desire to continue in osteopathic medicine. Grant money is distributed to the recipients in August. The annual number of recipients from each college/university shall be determined by the college/school using formula provided by the AOF. For application procedures or the number of applications accepted per college/school of osteopathic medicine, please contact the Financial Aid Department at your college/school.

AOA Presidential Memorial Leadership Award

The AOA Presidential Memorial Leadership award was established to recognize the contributions of AOA past presidents who have provided numerous year of service to advance the osteopathic profession. This award will recognize an osteopathic student entering their second, third or fourth years of studies who has demonstrated outstanding character, service and leadership potential in the osteopathic profession. One award of $3,000 will be presented to the recipient awarded during the AOF Ceremony at the AOA Annual Convention and Scientific Seminar. For application procedures, contact the Financial Aid Office of your college/school.

Russel C. McCaughan Education Fund Scholarship

The Russell C. McCaughan Educational Fund Scholarship was established in 1956 by Russell C. McCaughan, D.O. to provide scholarships to one rising second year student at each of the accredited colleges/schools of osteopathic medicine. Special emphasis is placed on financial need, outstanding academic and extracurricular activities, and strong motivation in osteopathic philosophy during their first year. Scholarships of $400 will be awarded to one student at each of the accredited colleges/schools of osteopathic medicine. Scholarship money is distributed to the recipients in August and is made payable to the individual and their college/school. For application procedures, contact the Financial Aid Office of your college/school.

National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program

Purpose To provide financial assistance to graduates who would like to serve in the underserved communities in the U.S. The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Community Scholarship Program is a part of the NHSC's overall strategy to improve access to primary and preventive health services for underserved communities and populations. The Community Scholarship Program (CSP) is a Federal-State-local partnership that awards grants to States to increase the availability of primary health care in urban and rural health professional shortage areas.

Eligibility/Description The CSP supports students committed to returning to their communities upon completion of their primary care training. States, through a single State agency, make grants to community organizations located in Federal health professional shortage areas. Community organizations use the funds to assist them with the costs of entering into contracts under which they provide scholarships to individuals to attend health professions schools. Interested applicants should contact National Health Service Corps for a list of states that participate in the program.
