Major/career interest in medicine; law; health sciences; dentistry; nursing. Must be currently enrolled in accredited law, medical, dental, or allied health care school.

Glenn Foundation/AFAR Scholarships for Research in the Biology of Aging

| Eligibility/Description |
Inaugurated in 1994, this scholarship program -- designed to attract potential scientists and clinicians to aging research -- provides pre-doctoral, Ph.D., DO and M.D. students the opportunity to conduct a three-month research project. Students will work in an area of biomedical research in aging under the auspices of a mentor. All medical students who want to apply must have completed at least one year of medical school at the start of the award. Former Glenn/AFAR recipients are not eligible.

Applications are evaluated on the basis of:
(1) The applicant's ability and promise as demonstrated by academic performance, statement of purpose, and letter of reference;
(2) Interest in gerontological issues as demonstrated by course work, independent study, volunteer activity, etc.;
(3) The qualifications of the designated mentor, and his or her endorsement of the research project and assurance of active supervision of it; and
(4) Merit and feasibility of the proposed project. |
| Award Amount |
Each scholarship carries an award of $5,500, of which $4,000 will go to the student and $1,500 to the mentor. |

To encourage medical students -- particularly budding researchers -- to consider geriatrics as a career, the Medical Student Geriatric Scholars Program awards short-term scholarships through a national competition. The program provides an opportunity for these students to train at an acclaimed center of excellence in geriatrics. Medical students who want to apply must have completed at least one year of medical school at the start of the award.

Merck/AFAR Research Scholarships in Geriatric Pharmacology for Medical and Pharmacy Students

To develop a corps of physicians with an understanding of medication use in the elderly, the Merck Company Foundation and AFAR created the Merck/AFAR Research Scholarships in Geriatric Pharmacology for medical and pharmacy students. These students will have the opportunity to undertake a two- to three-month full-time research project in geriatric pharmacology, conducted under the supervision of a faculty mentor. All medical and pharmacy students who want to apply must have completed at least one year of medical school at the start of the award.

Research Training Fellowships for Medical Students

| Eligibility/Description |
The fellowship program provides support to medical students for an intensive year of fundamental research at any academic or not-for-profit research institution in the United States (except NIH) to encourage medical students to pursue biomedical research careers. Stipends will be $16,000. Students may apply during any year of their medical studies and may have prior research experience, although this is not required. The fellowships are not available to students enrolled in M.D./Ph.D., Ph.D. or Sc.D. programs or those who hold the Ph.D. or Sc.D. degree. Applicants will be evaluated on their demonstrated superior scholarship and promise for future achievement in biomedical research. The Institute plans to award up to 60 new fellowships each year on the basis of a national competition. Awards will be announced in April. Toward the end of the year in research, fellows may apply for continued fellowship support, either for a second year of research or for support for up to two years, while study toward the M.D. degree is completed.
