Service Obligation ScholarshipsWestern Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE)
Based in Boulder, Colorado, collaborates with its fifteen member states to expand educational access and excellence for all citizens of the West. The Professional Student Exchange Program is one of three exchange programs of WICHE which enables students in thirteen Western states to enroll in selected out-of-state professional programs, usually because those fields of study are not available at public institutions in their home states. WICHE exchange students pay reduces levels of tuition - usually resident tuition in public institutions or reduced tuition at private schools. The home state pays a support fee to the admitting schools to help cover the cost of the students education. Students in the osteopathic medicine, physician therapy and physician assistant programs are eligible to apply. Further information is available at the WICHE Web site.
Armed Forces Health Profession Scholarship Program
Amount includes full tuition, fees, and monthly stipend. Stipends are subject to taxation. Required books and microscope rental fee are reimbursed. All three branches offer scholarships. Restriction: Candidates must be no more than 35 years old at graduation for the Army and Air Force; the Navy extends this age limit to age 40. Prior military time may waive this restriction - contact your recruiter.
Repayment requires one year's active service as a commissioned officer for each year of scholarship support is required. (4 year, 3 year, 2-year scholarships available). The minimum obligation is three years. The Army and Navy offer a two-year scholarship with a payback of a three-year obligation. Scholarships
Students must serve in a designated medically undeserved area (rural, inner city or Indian health). Tuition, fees, books, supplies and a monthly stipend are provided by the scholarship. Students that are eligible to apply are osteopathic medicine, physician assistants and family nurse practitioners. The scholar must serve one year for each year of support received or a minimum of two years. The deadline date for all applicants is the end of March. The Medical students must submit their letter of acceptance with their application. The Physician Assistance students must submit their application by the March deadline, but their acceptance letter deadline is July 1. Loan Repayment Program
Provides funds to repay loans incurred by health care professionals who agree to a two year commitment to provide primary health care services in priority health professional shortage areas. NHSC provides up to $50,000 for loan repayment for eligible program participants. They will allocate up to $35,000 for loan repayments for each additional year of service if extensions are needed if scholar qualifies. Students that are eligible to apply are osteopathic medicine, physician assistants and family nurse practitioners. Students can apply after they have completed their training and passed their boards. Indian Health Service Scholarship Program
Section 104 authorizes scholarships for students enrolled in health profession schools. Although any student may compete, priority is given to applicants who are American Indian. Amount: Tuition, fees, and a monthly stipend from August through July. Stipends subject to taxation. Restrictions: Eligibility must be renewed every year. The scholarship is for one year only. Priority consideration will be given for continued support. Awards are competitive and contingent upon available funds. Repayment: 1 year of service to 1 year of scholarship providing health services relative to Indian health manpower needs of IHS and the Indian people. Deadline: March 30th. Kaiser Permanente Southern California - Allied Health Care Education Scholarship Program
Awards are in the amount of $2,500 twice a year. The purpose of the Kaiser Permanente Allied Health Care Scholarship Program is to encourage allied health care professionals to practice direct patient care in medically underserved areas of California; to increase the number of appropriately trained allied health care professionals; and in courage demographically underrepresented groups to pursue the allied health care profession.
Restrictions include U.S. citizenship or legal residency. Must agree to practice direct patient care for at least one year in a paid position in a medically under-served area within California. Applications: WesternU Financial Aid Office or California's Health Professions Education Foundation.
Whittier Hospital Volunteer Scholarship Program
Awards of $1,500.00 - $2,500.00. The deadline to apply is April. Awards are based on academic achievement, personal character, financial need and a commitment to a hopital related career. Students from all disciplines are welcome to apply but you must have a permanent address in the following cities: Brea, Buena Park, El Monte, Fullerton, Hacienda Hgts, La Habra, La Habra Hgts,La Mirada, La Puente, Pico Rivera, Rowland hgts, Santa Fe Springs and Whittier. Renewal students or students that have received the scholarship previously still apply the same way but please put renewal on your application.
