DO FAQs - Curriculum
How are the clinical rotations set up?
Year Three is very structured to give students a good background of core rotations. Year Four, students may rotate through facilities that they are considering for internship and/or residency training.
When I graduate, do I have to take a standardized exam before beginning to practice?
Yes. Before applying for state licensure, you will have passed Parts I, II and III of the Comprehensive Licensure Examination (COMLEX) and/or the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE). You will then take an oral and written state licensure exam. There is reciprocity between some states.
Is it advisable to work while I take classes at Western University/COMP?
No. This is a full-time commitment and we discourage our students from working, even part time.
Is there an opportunity to do medical research while attending Western University?
Yes. Students may participate in research with faculty in both the basic and clinical sciences and it is likely that you will be able to find a faculty member who is working on a research project that is of interest to you. We also have state-of-the-art wet labs available for bench research. However, research is usually limited to summer breaks and vacations because of the intensity of the curriculum. Faculty members from all programs are regularly published in prominent journals; students who work with them also are often recognized for their contribution to the research. |
