Doctor of Veterinary Medicine FAQs - Application & Interview
Applicants must apply directly through the Veterinary Medicine College Application Service (VMCAS). Our supplemental application will be posted on the Western University Web site in early June. You may access the application download page between June and October. The supplemental application will not be available after the supplemental application deadline. ETS says it will not send me an official test score report. What should I do? ETS will automatically send you a score report free of charge approximately 10-15 days after you take the exam. Since you will have already seen your scores on the screen after you take the exam, you can submit this report to Western University. DO NOT OPEN the envelope in which the score report arrives and include it with your single application packet. If you would like a copy of the score report for your own records, or if you took the exam previously, you may request an additional copy from ETS for a minimal charge.I'm having trouble accessing the application checklist, evaluation forms and sample forms. What should I do? This problem is common and more than likely has to do with the version of Acrobat Reader that is currently installed on your computer. This issue can be resolved by downloading the newest version of Acrobat Reader from our Plug-ins page and restarting your computer. Can I return to the application form or personal questionnaire by bookmarking the page? While you can and should save the blank PDF version of all forms to your desktop, you cannot save the PDF with your personal information in it. It is essential that you follow the step-by-step instructions on the application download page so as to avoid losing information you have entered into the application or personal questionnaire forms. As the instructions note, you should first download the most recent version of Acrobat Reader, then save all five (5) forms to your desktop. Once you have done this you can type in/edit these forms until you close the PDF or your computer is turned off. Be sure to proof read your application carefully and make all necessary adjustments before closing the PDF. Closing either of the PDF forms will restore them to their original blank state (void of your information). Can I enter some of the application or personal questionnaire information now and return at a later date to complete it? You may continue to work within the PDF as long as you do not close the document or shut down your computer. You cannot save the PDF version of the application form or personal questionnaire with your personal information in it. If you close the PDF, it will be void of your information when you re-open the form. Closing any of the PDF forms will restore them to their original blank state (void of your information). How should I list the biological sciences lab grade that was incorporated into my biological sciences course? If you did not receive a separate grade for the biological sciences lab and/or the lab is not listed separately on your transcript you should:
If I received multiple grades for physics or organic chemistry, how do I list this on the application? We have provided two lines for Organic Chemistry and four lines for Physics. You may list one course and one lab for Organic Chemistry and two courses and two labs for Physics. Once again, if the lab was included/incorporated leave the lab sections blank. Just be sure to check the appropriate box for the lab sections. Do I have to follow the exact format of the sample curriculum vitae (CV)? No. This sample was provided to assist applicants who do not know what a curriculum vitae should look like. If a category does not apply to you, feel free to remove it and/or to add additional categories as appropriate. May I hand deliver my application? Yes! Just come in during our office hours. Our regular office hours are 8:30-5:00 Monday through Friday. This is a good way to know that your application arrived safe and sound. What will you do if you receive an incomplete application? It is absolutely essential that you strive to submit an application including all of the pieces outlined on the application checklist. However, if you submit a majority of the appropriate pieces by the deadline (must include the application itself), you may submit outstanding items during the grace period. The grace period for applicants generally ends in early November. No exceptions will be made after these final deadlines. How will you evaluate my grade point average (GPA) during the application process? The prerequisite GPA and overall GPA (includes undergraduate and graduate coursework) will be calculated for all applicants and provided to the admissions committee along with your complete application file. Will the committee consider non-academic responsibilities when evaluating academic performance and load? Yes. There are a number of questions on the personal questionnaire where you can indicate other responsibilities that you have taken on during your education and this will be taken into consideration when reviewing your application. If these responsibilities will continue during your education at WesternU, please explain how you plan to manage these duties while in the DVM program. It is important for you to demonstrate that you have thought through the process and understand the intensity of the program and what it will take to successfully complete the program. May I submit more than the required number of recommendation letters? Yes, but quality is much preferred over quantity. Choose your letters of recommendation wisely; the reference should know you well and be able to speak to your knowledge, work ethic, understanding of the profession, and morals. If applying through the Veterinary Colleges Application Service (VMCAS), recommendation forms should be obtained from and returned to VMCAS. Recommendation forms for the direct application should be printed from the WesternU website, signed and given to recommendation writers. Each writer will then return the form in a sealed-signed envelope to the applicant, who will include the letter in his/her direct application packet. How and when will I know if I have been invited for an interview? The Admissions Committee will review completed application files throughout the fall. Should you be selected for an interview, you will receive an e-mail from a WesternU representative in mid to late January or early February. Invited applicants will be scheduled for an interview in February. How will the committee decide which applicants will be offered seats? WesternU-CVM is committed to the goal of admitting a class with a high level of broadly defined diversity (i.e. age, gender, ethnicity, educational background, economic background, professional experience, career goals, etc.) that reflects the diversity of people in theHow are behavioral-based interviews conducted? If invited for an interview, you have been found acceptable based on your veterinary and animal experience as well as your academic record. The interview will serve as an opportunity for you to demonstrate qualities that could not fully be assessed by your application alone. The college faculty wish to learn more about you and determine your compatibility to our unique veterinary program. It is important to note that we conduct blind, behavioral-based interviews that are standardized for all candidates. Interviewers will not have knowledge of your application prior to your interview. Please keep this in mind when formulating your answers. Also note that the questions will require you to draw from personal experience. You will also be provided the opportunity to orient yourself with our college curriculum and philosophies to determine if we are the right fit for your academic goals. When will decision letters be mailed? All decision letters will be mailed on March 15. Should it be necessary, alternates will be selected from the list of alternate candidates between April and August. Alternate candidates not selected for the class will be notified of their final status in August. Applicants will be notified immediately if there is a change in their status. Can international students apply and are there different application requirements? Yes, we consider international applicants for admission. There is one set of requirements that all applicants must complete in order to apply to the WesternU-CVM. The three additional things that may apply to you as an international student are:
