Coursework Acceptability

Please view our acceptable course database to determine whether the courses you have taken or plan to take, will satisfy the specified prerequisites. If the course in question is not listed, we encourage you to submit a course acceptability form to inquire about the acceptability of the course. If you would like a full review of the courses you have taken towards our prerequisites, please complete our Academic Worksheet. Academic Worksheets are only reviewed March through July.

Other Requirements

GPA & Degree Requirements

Applicants must have a 2.50 overall GPA (all coursework) at the time of application in order to be considered for admission. Applicants are not required to have obtained an undergraduate degree (BA/BS), however earning a degree will likely strengthen your application. Western U-CVM supports the admission of applicants from a wide range of undergraduate degree programs.

Residency Requirements

State of residence will not be considered as admissions criteria. Admissions decisions will be based on merit rather than state of residence. Up to 8% of the accepted students may be international students.

Standardized Examinations

All applicants must take either the General Graduate Record Examination(GRE) OR the Medical College Admissions Test(MCAT):
  • Examinations must be completed within 5 years of anticipated matriculation
  • When choosing test dates, note score reporting dates to ensure meeting the supplemental application deadline of October 15.
  • A student score report should be sent to the applicant's home address. This unopened score report should be placed in the WesternU application packet
  • Score reports may be sent from theGRE/MCAT agency directly to WesternU. The GRE Institution Code is 4152 and the GRE Department Code is 0617.

The Test of English as a Foreign Language(TOEFL) (including essay) is required for all applicants who are not U.S. citizens and for whom English is a second language. EXCEPTION:The TOEFL exam will be waived for students who have graduated, or will have graduated, with a confirmed baccalaureate or higher degree from a United States institution by the time of matriculation if appropriate documentation is provided.

  • Must receive a minimum score of 550 (paper-based exam) or 213 (computer-based exam)
  • TOEFL scores are valid for 3 years and must be submitted at the time of application. A course-by-course evaluation should be sent to the applicant's home address. This unopened evaluation should be placed in the WesternU application packet.
  • Score reports may be sent from the evaluation service directly to WesternU. Just be sure to address them to CVM Admissions.

Animal Experience Requirements

Animal-related experience must total at least 500 hours of hands-on experience that goes beyond observation. Supervisors should be able to assess applicant's interest in animal well-being, work habits and personal integrity. Appropriate venues include but are not limited to:
  • Veterinary practices
  • Animal medical environments
  • Commercial animal production operations
  • Regulatory animal control and humane shelters
  • Animal entertainment (zoos etc.)
  • Animal research institutions

Letters of Recommendation

We require three (3) letters of recommendation. Choose your letters of recommendation wisely; the reference should know you well and be able to speak to your knowledge, work ethic, understanding of the profession, and morals. Recommendation forms should be obtained from and returned to VMCAS.

Applicants With Foreign Coursework

Applicants who wish to use course work completed outside the United States must submit their transcripts for evaluation to a Western University Approved Service. A course-by-course evaluation is required and all course work must be designated as undergraduate, graduate or professional. Western University will only honor evaluations from one of the above services. The evaluation must be included with the application packet.

Please Note

All requirements (including prerequisite coursework)
are reviewed annually and thus are subject to change. Requirements on this page were updated April 2, 2008 and are effective for applications submitted for the class entering in fall 2009.
