The MSN/LM is best described by the ANCC (American Nurses Credentialing Center) as follows: Nursing administration reflects the practice of nurses in an administrative position at the nurse manager or nurse executive level in a health care organization and is responsible for the proper allocation of available resources to provide efficient and effective nursing care. The nurse manager provides input into executive level decisions and collaborates with the nurse executive and others in the organizational programming and related committee work. The nurse manager has a major responsibility to implement the philosophy, goals, and standards of the health care organization and implement clinical nursing services within their defined areas of responsibility. A nurse manager assumes a leadership role in planning, organizing, implementing, and controlling the care of individuals and aggregates across the spectrum of health care settings. This includes, but is not limited to, aspects of quality outcomes, staff development, care management, and research. What can I do with a Masters in Leadership and Management? Students receiving their MSN in Leadership and Management will be qualified to work in various levels of management, strategic planning, patient education, risk management or case management. They will be able to focus their nursing experience at the systems level working on quality improvement in a variety of health care settings. An MSN in Leadership and management will give you the degree and foundation necessary for working in administrative and managerial positions in a variety of health care settings. This graduate program provides a bachelor s prepared nurse with the latest knowledge and applied skills to be an effective leader in today's complex healthcare environment. Today's health care systems require nurse leaders who can integrate experience, knowledge, research and technology to effectively work within an interprofessional team. Can I still work in the clinical setting with my MSN/Leadership and Management degree?It is widely known that effective leaders are also proficient clinically. Working with a hands on approach to patient care will only enhance your ability to effect change at the systems level. Will a project or thesis be required at the end of the Leadership and Management program? Yes, there will be a 3 unit CGN 5999 Senior Project in the final semester of the program. The senior project requires comprehensive integration of all facets of the nursing process in the form of a feasibility study, business plan, or change project to improve patient care, patient outcomes, or work design. As such, students are responsible for identifying the need for the project, driving and restraining forces for the project, an implementation plan, a budget, a timeline, and evaluation criteria to assess project outcomes. | |
