MSN Entry Level Program Admission Requirements

Thank you for taking time to visit our web site! We encourage you to take a few moments to carefully review the admissions requirements and application process for our MSN Entry Level Program.

Prerequisite Coursework

Applicants are required to have obtained an undergraduate degree (BA/BS) from a regionally accredited institution. Exceptions will be made on a case by case basis. WesternU supports the admission of applicants from a wide range of undergraduate degree programs. Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 GPA in the last 60 semester units or 90 quarter units (includes undergraduate and graduate coursework).
  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution
  • GPA 3.0 (undergraduate and graduate)
  • Official TOEFL score (if applicable)
  • Required prerequisite coursework (semester units)
  • Communications (6 units)
  • Statistics (3 units)
  • Social Sciences (3 units)
  • Psychology (3 units)
  • Nutrition (3 units)
  • Anatomy (4 units)
  • Physiology (4 units)
  • Microbiology (4 units)

If you would like to have a full review of the courses that you have taken or will be taking to fulfill our prerequisites, you can complete an Academic Worksheet. The Academic Worksheet is provided as a courtesy to you to ensure that all of the above prerequisites are met or will be met by the end of the Spring term prior to entry. Academic Worksheets will be evaluated on a first come, first service basis from April 1 through September 30. Please mail completed worksheets to: University Admissions Office, 309 E. Second Street, Pomona, CA 91766.

Please view our listing of approved prerequisites to determine whether the courses you have taken or will be taking meet our requirements. Admissions Counselors are available by telephone or e-mail to answer any questions you may have regarding the admissions process.

Approval of prerequisite courses will be based on transcript evaluation by the CGN admissions committee. Additional documentation (course syllabus, course description and/or any other documentation of the course in question) may be requested. Standardized Examinations

Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL):
TOEFL, including essay, is required for all applicants who are not U.S. citizens and for whom English is a second language. Exception: The TOEFL exam will be waived for students who have graduated with a confirmed baccalaureate or higher degree from a United States institution at the time of application.

Minimum Scores:
213 for the Computer Based test
550 for the Paper Based test
79 for the new Internet Based TOEFL (IBT)
TOEFL scores are valid for 2 years and must be submitted at the time of application.

Computer Requirements

Access to a personal computer that meets or exceeds the following minimum system requirements:
  • PC System Minimum of 2 GHz processor (CPU) or equivalent with Windows XP Home or better (3.2 GHz CPU or better with Windows XP Professional is optimal)
  • Minimum of 512 MB RAM
  • 15" or larger CRT or Flat Panel Monitor with video display card capable of displaying (at a minimum) 65,000 colors, 800x600 resolution, 75 MHz flicker-free refresh rate
  • 10 GB or more of free hard disk space (20 GB or more recommended)
  • 16X combo CD/DVD drive (24X or faster highly recommended; combo CD/DVD player/burner for backups recommended)
  • Newest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer browser
  • Microsoft Office 2007 Standard Suite or higher with Word, Excel and PowerPoint (Microsoft Works is NOT acceptable)
  • Newest version of Virus Protection program with subscription that supports automatic weekly updates (such as McAfee Virus Scan or Norton AntiVirus)
  • Newest version of Microsoft Outlook or Outlook Express
  • Newest version of RealPlayer and/or Windows Media Player plug-in(to download, visit our Plug Ins page)
  • Newest version of Adobe Acrobat plug-in
  • 24 bit Sound Card and speakers
  • Dedicated Internet Connection and Internet Service Provider (Absolute minimum: DSL, wireless, or cable modem broadband, with router-based firewall protection. A 56 kbps or higher modem with dedicated telephone line can be used for online course access if absolutely necessary, but will be inadequate for most supporting study materials).
  • Printer

Please note that these items are the MINIMUM requirements. If you plan to purchase a new system for this program, we recommend that you contact the College first.

Health Insurance

All students must be covered by health insurance throughout the program. Proof of health insurance must be provided at the time of registration annually. If you do not have insurance at the time of registration, Western University has plans available from which to choose.

Accreditation

Western University is approved by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). The College of Graduate Nursing programs are approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) and professionally accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).
