Registered Dental Hygienist/College of Dental Medicine

Description:

To assist clinical faculty, dental students and other clinical support staff in the provision of oral health care to patients in the College of Dental Medicine. The Registered Dental Hygienist is responsible for the delivery of oral hygiene and appropriate preventive services to the patients of the College of Dental Medicine's Dental Center as directed by the Associate Dean for Patient Care and Clinical Education.

Description of Duties and Tasks

Essential Job Functions

1. Assist in the oral health management of patients of the Western University of Health Sciences Dental Center

2. Obtain and document baseline oral hygiene assessment data

3. Provide oral health education and counseling for patients of the Dental Center

4. Work toward the integration of appropriate dental hygiene care with other health care professional involved in the patients' health care management

5. Receive and places necessary telephone calls consistent with professional matters, clinical business, and patient care as related to the Dental Center

6. Counsel patients on nutrition as related to oral hygiene

7. Participate in the achievement of patient satisfaction and Dental Center production goals by working efficiently and providing a high level of patient service

8. Support the educational mission of the clinical faculty, including role modeling and teaching students how to function with a dental hygienist on the dental team. Support clinical faculty in teaching students how to function as a dental provider on the dental team.

9. Participate in required training and mandatory in-services such as BLS, infection control, and HIPAA.

10. Other duties as assigned.

Skills:

Individuals must possess the knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

1. Must be a Registered Dental Hygienist in the State of California; have a minimum of three years experience as a dental hygienist; current Basic Life Support

2. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to effectively interact with health care professionals, students and patients. Bilingual ability preferred.

3. Experience with computers, printers, calculator, fax machine, copy machine operation, and telephone operation.

Qualifications Standard

1. Education: Must be a Registered Dental Hygienist (minimum of Associate degree) in the State of California, including current BLS.

2. Experience: 3 or more years of experience in a clinic, hospital clinic or dental office preferred. Bilingual (Spanish/English), helpful.
