About the Learning Enhancement and Academic Development Office

The Learning Enhancement and Academic Development (LEAD) Office serves all Western University students. All academic and personal counseling and referrals to other campus support services are completely confidential.

We are located in the Health Science Center building on the first floor, Room 101. Our staff is happy to answer any questions you might have.

As the Director of the LEAD office for the past six years, David A. Hacker has striven to develop a highly effective organization whose function is to assist all Western University students successful complete their educational requirements and graduate. He bases his program on over twenty year s experience in learning skills assistance for health care students and professionals. He worked over ten years at the University of California , Irvine College of Medicine and nearly five years for Kaplan. During this time he has helped thousands of students prepared to take their medical boards and other licensing exams.

Before coming to Western University of Health Sciences, Dagmar specialized in teaching stress reduction/management training programs. As Assistant Director of the LEAD office, she combines learning style and skills assessment with stress management in a personalized training program available to students one-on-one or in small groups. Her goal: to assist Western University students in reaching their very highest academic goal, while remaining balanced, "relaxed, calm, and wide awake," even under the most demanding circumstances.

Her counseling and teaching expertise are a welcome addition to the tutoring, learning enhancement and academic development services the LEAD office is known for.

Dagmar relocated here from the East Coast, where she held the position of Director of Development at a small graduate school. In addition, she has been teaching people how to improve the quality of their personal and professional lives since 2000. She worked with non profit organizations, community colleges, universities, hospices, and hospitals in the Philadelphia area.

Martha L. Ruelas is the Coordinator for the LEAD office and of the Summer Medical Science Prep Program. She has been working at Western U for a number of years and would like to extend a helping hand in any way that she can to make sure students succeed academically.

Martha's job is to assist the LEAD Directors in the day-to-day operations of the office. She also provides support to the Directors by defining, providing, and evaluating academic services and programs for participating students.

Martha welcomes your calls or emails containing question or concerns that you may have regarding the services provided by the LEAD office. She would also like to personally invite you to stop by the office to talk about random stuff or to sneak a piece of candy out of the candy jar! Martha would like you to know that our department is dedicated to helping every single student that needs our services; we are here to help and we are here for you.
