Mission and GoalsMission Statement
The mission of the LEAD Office is to assist Western University health professionals and educators in the teaching and training of students to increase their knowledge and the skills necessary for the life-long learning needs of health care providers.
Goals
- The Office of Learning Enhancement and Academic Development (LEAD), a Division of the Office of Student Affairs, provides a variety of services meant to assist all Western students in the achievement of their personal and professional goals. The LEAD Office takes a “proactive” approach to aiding students, emphasizing life-long and adult learning principles. This is accomplished through individual and group counseling, special workshops and learning skills programs on such topics as time management, note-taking, reading comprehension and writing skills, memorization and concentration, anxiety/stress management and test-taking techniques.
- The LEAD Office serves as a resource and advocate for students with academic difficulties, and is committed to helping these students acquire the skills and training needed for them to be successful throughout their academic career. In cooperation with the Center for Disability Issues and the Health Professions, the LEAD Office assists students with learning or physical disabilities through individualized counseling and content area tutoring. Learning disability assistance includes advice on how each student can acquire the appropriate compensatory abilities and effective study methods that will make their time at Western University less stressful and highly productive.
- The LEAD Office administers the Tutorial Assistance Program (TAP). This program offers supplemental instruction for students in academic difficulty or requiring special assistance. Course content instruction is facilitated by competent and sensitive peer tutors. Tutoring is scheduled individually or in small groups.
- The LEAD Office coordinates the Summer Medical Sciences Prep Program (SMSPP). This program is designed to orient in-coming, first-year, medical, physician assistant and physical therapy students to the WesternU campus and community and to ease adjustment to the demands of their new academic environment. During this intense four week program students have a chance to get a “head start” on their first year of school by an introduction to Gross Anatomy, Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine (OMM), Biochemistry, Pharmacology and Writing Skills. Special learning skills workshops are included in the program.
- The LEAD Office endeavors to enhance each students sense of belonging and works closely with individual students in overcoming environmental, social, cultural, or academic barriers that may interfere with their learning or academic success.
