How to Become a Tutor

If you are interested in becoming a tutor please read these guidelines and instructions.

Tutor Qualifications

To become a tutor you must:
  • be in good academic standing.
  • have received a grade of "B" or better in the course(s) you want to tutor OR
  • have been recommended by a member of the faculty to tutor a course.

If you meet these qualifications, fill out the online Tutorial Assistance Program (TAP) Tutor Information Form.

Tutor Guidelines

  • After you are signed up to be a tutor, you will be assigned student(s) to tutor. The assignment is made via email. In most cases, tutors will be assigned a tutoring group of 3 to 5 individuals. Because of a shortage of tutors, one-on-one tutoring is reserved for students recommended by appropriate faculty, staff or administration to get one-on-one tutoring.

  • If a tutor is approached by fellow students for tutorial services, he/she must advise potential tutees to either fill out a request form for tutor services on the LEAD webpage or put their name on a tutee waiting list at the LEAD Office.
  • If a tutor wants to be compensated for tutorial services by the LEAD Office, he can only accept tutees registered with the LEAD Office.

  • Of course, a tutee may request a specific tutor. However, there is no guarantee that this request will be granted, since tutors and tutees are matched on a first-come-first, served basis.

  • Students always have the option to tutor their friends and their choice of students on their own, outside their service to the LEAD Office. Their services, however, will not be paid by the LEAD Office.

  • If TAP tutors are approached with requests for one-on-one tutoring, please note that students have to have specific, official permission to receive special tutoring.

  • Tutoring dates, times, and hours should be listed on the tutor's time sheet available in the LEAD Office.

  • The tutor must collect signatures of his tutees on the time sheet.

  • The tutor must sign the time sheet.

  • The tutor must submit the signed tutor time sheet to the LEAD office for payment by the last day of each month. Any timesheets turned in late cannot be paid until the following month.

  • Checks are mailed by Accounts Payable to the address provided by the tutor, so please make sure we have your current, correct address.

  • If a tutor wishes to change their status, whether it is to discontinue their services altogether or change their involvement, they need to inform the LEAD Office.
  • Tutors need to report any major problems they may be having with a tutee to the LEAD Office.
