General Information

What are the library's hours?

Check the library's hours webpage for the most current information.

Where are the photocopiers located?

The library has three photocopiers located in the copy room on the 3rd floor. A color photocopier is available on the 2nd floor inside the Teaching Lab.

How much are photocopies?

Black and white photocopies are $.05 per page, color photocopies are $.65 per page.

Where can I use a word processing program?

Access to word processing software is available from all library computers. Access to these computers is on a first come first served basis.

Can the study rooms be reserved?

Two or more students may reserve study rooms up to 24 hours in advance. For more information, please see our Group Study Room Web page.

Where can I access the network with my laptop?

The network can be accessed via Laptop computer from the library's first floor study area, the second and third floor study rooms, or any port marked with a red sticker.

What journals do you carry?

A 115k pdf file is available with a list of our Current Serial Subscriptions. You may also search our print journals using the Online Catalog. The library's electronic journal subscriptions are available on the E-Resources page.

Can we eat in the library?

The 1st floor study area is the library's designated student eating area. Students may not eat on the 2nd or 3rd floors.

Where can I park?

Street parking is available near the library building and paid public parking is available in the parking lots near the library building.

Can I print at the library?

The library provides printers for student use in the two computer labs and 1st floor computer area.

Who can access the library?

The library is public accessible, all visitors must provide valid identification and wear a visitors badge while in the library building.

How do I find directions to the library?

Visit the Location and Direction Web page for directions to the library.

Does the library have a typewriter for student use?

Located within the Media Lab is a typewriter that is available for student use.

Where are the restrooms?

Restrooms are located in the southwest corner of each floor of the library building.

Does the library have drinking fountains?

Drinking fountains are located on the second and third floors in the southwest corner of the library near the restrooms.

Locating Material

Where is the video collection located?

The library has two video collections, a reference collection and a circulating collection. The reference collection is located in the Media Lab and the circulating collection is intermixed with the circulating materials on the second floor.

Where are the reference books?

The reference books are located on the 2nd floor outside of the Teaching Lab.

How can I find a book?

The library's online catalog can be used to locate a cataloged item within the library.

How do you search for articles?

The library has several electronic databases available to the Western University Community, all of which can be used to search abstracts and full-text articles.

Off-Campus Access

How do I get remote access to the library's databases?

Remote access is available to Western University faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students. To access electronic resources off-campus use your Western University Network username and password. Your Western University Network username/password is the same one used to access your Western University email.

I am a Clinical Faculty member or OPTIwest Resident, how do I request a username/password to get remote access to the library's databases?

The current spring password will expire on May 19, 2008. To request a summer password please contact the library on or after May 19th at 909-469-5323 during library business hours or you may use the email request form. The summer password will expire on July 1, 2008.

On July 1, 2008 the library will begin using a new remote authentication system for clinical faculty. To begin using the new authentication system you will need to fill out an online application form. Once your application has been approved you will be issued a personalized username/password that will be activated on July 1, 2008. This username and password will expire on June 30, 2009 at which time you will need to submit your application again. Remote access passwords are for individual, non-commercial use and may not be shared.

Interlibrary Loan

How long does it take to get an ILL article?

There is no set or guaranteed time of article delivery. The ILL staff promptly processes each request so that there is as little delay as possible. The average request takes approximately 7 business days.

Where do I send requests for articles?

Requests for articles can be made using ILLiad. To access the Request an Article form, login to the ILLiad Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery system using your Western University Network username and password. The first time you log in you will be asked to register by filling out a form. Once registered you can submit and review requests, check the request status, and receive electronically delivered documents. For more information, please visit the Interlibrary Loan Web page.

Reference

Can reference books/materials be checked out?

Reference books/materials can not be checked out.

What are the reference desk hours?

The Reference desk is staffed Monday through Friday 9am-5pm and Saturday 11am-4pm.

Media

Can material from the Media Lab be checked out?

Media lab materials are for library use only. Faculty members may reserve these materials for in house use.

Where is the video collection located?

Circulation

Can journals be checked out?

The journal collection cannot be checked out.

Does the library have a book-drop?

The library does not have a book-drop. Materials must be returned at the Circulation Desk during the library's normal business hours.

What is the checkout period for most material?

The checkout periods vary depending on whether the student is on campus or off campus. Inquire with the Circulation Department for the appropriate checkout periods or visit the library's Borrowing Services Web page.

How many books/items can I check out?

For currently enrolled students and faculty members there is no checkout limit on books and circulating materials other than Audio-Digest tapes which have a ten-tape limit. There is a limit for alumni, university affiliates and signature cardholders. Inquire at the Circulation Desk for current checkout limits.

Can I place a book on hold if it is checked out?

Materials may be placed on hold at either the Reference Office or the Circulation Desk. You may also place material on hold using the library's Online Catalog.

How many Audio Digest tapes can I checkout?

There is a limit of ten Audio-Digest tapes per checkout.

Can I borrow materials if I'm not a student?

Individuals that are not affiliated with the Western University community may only borrow materials by use of a purchased signature card. Inquire with the Circulation Department for details.

Does the library provide a FAX service?

The library does provide FAX services for a nominal fee.

Does the library provide scanner services?

The color printer/photocopier on the 2nd floor of the library in the Teaching Lab has scanning capabilities.

What is the renewal policy?

Library renewals are based on the year of enrollment. Inquire with the Circulation Department for the accurate renewal time or visit the library's Borrowing Services Web page.

Can I checkout without an ID?

Students, Faculty and staff members must possess a valid current Western University ID badge to borrow materials from the library.

Is there a limit on how many videos I can be check out?

There is no limit to the number of videos borrowed from the circulating video collection.

Visitors

Can visitors use the study rooms?

Study rooms are reserved for university students and individuals within the university community.

Can visitors use the computer labs?

Due to licensing agreements the library's electronic databases and computer labs are restricted to students, staff, faculty, and university affiliates. Visitors may use the computers on the 1st floor of the library.
