College of Graduate Nursing Advisory Board

Purpose

The purpose of the Advisory Board is to consult with and advise the Dean of the College on matters relating to education, nursing and health care; provide feedback to the Dean on the College's level of achievement in meeting its stated goals and objectives; share information about the College's goals, plans and achievements with interested publics; and serve as a liaison between the College and the community in order to promote mutual understanding and cooperation.

Membership
  • The Advisory Board consists of 15 to 25 members broadly representing all aspects of the nursing industry.
  • Membership is at the invitation of the Dean.
  • It is desirable to have some non-alumni members.
  • Company representation is generally limited to one member per company, unless significantly different roles are represented, in which case two individuals may serve.
  • The term of Board membership is 2 years with one reappointment possible.

Structure and Work
  • The work of the Advisory Board focuses on national health care issues, how they impact the nursing industry, and the role the College of Graduate Nursing should play.
  • Meetings are structured somewhat like a think tank. There is usually ample opportunity to contribute personal perspectives.
  • Advisory Board members are asked from time to time to identify possible financial resources for specific projects and to be an advocate on behalf of the college.

Meetings
  • The Advisory Board meets three times a year.
  • Meetings are generally held at Western University of Health Sciences (Pomona, CA).
  • Meetings are held on Wednesdays and start at 6:00 p.m. and adjourn by 8:00 p.m.

Liz Aragon, RN, MHA
Vice President, Nursing Services
San Antonio Hospital

Liz Aragon has been a Registered Nurse for over 25 years. She obtained her nursing degree from Mt. San Antonio College, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix and her Master of Health Administration from the University of LaVerne.

Liz is certified by the Board of Registered Nursing as a clinical instructor and has been on staff at Mt. San Antonio College Junior College and Chaffey College. Liz has held numerous certifications including CCRN and RNC. Liz is associated with several Nursing Leadership Organizations and is currently serving as secretary for the Inland Area Nurse Leadership Council. Liz has also in the past served on the advisory board for Western University graduate nursing program.

Liz's professional experience includes her role as a staff nurse in various nursing departments such as Critical Care units, Post Anesthesia Care units, Emergency department and Labor & Delivery. She has also worked in the capacity of Nurse Educator and Nursing Director. Liz is currently the Chief Nursing Officer at San Antonio Community Hospital, a 283 bed, non profit organization located in Upland, California, which currently employs a nursing department of 900 FTEs.

Karen Blessing, RN, BSN
Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center
Karen Blessing is currently the Nursing Director for clinical services in Human Resources at Pomona Valley Hospital. She has expertise in cardiac service line management, critical care, emergency care, case management, rehabilitation, and medical-surgical nursing. She has served on the Board of the American Heart Association. Karen has implemented a number of innovative programs to improve patient care, nursing effectiveness, and reduce costs. She also has implemented programs to recruit and retain nurses, as well as increase the number of students in local nursing programs. She graduated from Cal State Los Angeles with her BSN and recently completed her MBA through the University of LaVerne. She is interested in participating on the Advisory Board because she is concerned about the impact of the national nursing shortage.

Whitney A. Bouma
Group Product Manager
Welch Allyn, Inc.
Whitney Bouma is a Group Product Manager of thermometry products at Welch Allyn. She has developed and managed marketing programs for Thermometry and Stethoscopes products worldwide in Hospital and Alternate Care markets. Whitney is a graduate of the University of San Diego with master's and bachelor's degrees in business administration and a bachelor's degree in communication studies.

Suellen Crano, PhD
Retired, VP Strategic Planning
Western University of Health Sciences
Dr. Crano served as Vice President for Strategic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness at Western University, until retiring in November, 2002 to battle cancer, a battle that she is currently winning. After earning her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration/Student Personnel in 1984 from Michigan State University, Dr. Crano served in administrative roles at Texas A&M University, The The University of Arizona, the State of Michigan Department of Higher Management Systems, and Wyeth Laboratories, Inc. Dr. Crano currently serves on the advisory board of the East San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the American Cancer Society and on the governing board of Wired International, a non-profit humanitarian organization devoted to providing medical and healthcare information, education and communications resources to communities in developing and post-conflict regions, in addition to the Advisory Board for CGN. Dr. Crano also devotes time and effort helping cancer patients across the U.S. get quality medical and personal care.

Sarah Daum, EdD

Sarah G.Daum, EdD, has 30 years of experience in the health care industry as a practitioner, educator, and administrator. Her background also includes rehabilitation medicine and allied health; medical education, curriculum design and delivery; faculty professional development; and educational administration. She is a published author in health care faculty development, clinical education, and para-professional education. Daum serves as a consultant for the Long-Term Care Association, CAHF/QCHFA.B.

Peggy Diller
Vice President, Patient Care Services/CNO

Peggy has been a California hospital-nursing executive for more than twenty years. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University and her Master's in Health Care Management from California State University in Los Angeles. She is actively involved in the Nursing Leadership Council of Southern California and the Los Angeles area Nursing Leadership Council. She is a Past President for both councils. She has served ACNL on various committees including chairing the Health Policy Committee and Board Member - South. Peggy's experience has encompassed both union and non-union work environments and "at the table" negotiations. Peggy led nursing operations through the merger of two large Los Angeles area hospitals and as CNO, she coordinated patient care services through the process of a sale and conversion from a stand-alone, not-for profit facility to becoming a hospital in a large national for-profit health care system

Miriam Fulton currently practices at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the cardiac surgery department. She has worked there for 29 years in the capacity of Staff Nurse, Nurse Educator, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Nurse Practitioner. She graduated from Loma Linda University with her MSN degree. She joins the advisory board to expand her current community service activities.

Scott Helf, DO

Scott Helf is a graduate of Western University, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific class of 1999. He is currently the Director Medical Informatics and Educational Technology at Western University at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. His interests include travel, history, learning foreign languages, video games, and playing with his dog. He views his participation on the Advisory Board as an important and effective means of promoting the use of technology in the education of health professionals.

Judy Husted, RN, MSN

Judy Husted is the Executive Director of Patient Care Services, Regional Operations. She provides operational leadership for the development, planning and management of Southern California Kaiser Foundation Hospitals/Health Plan patient care, nursing practice and allied health services. With 20 years of senior healthcare leadership experience in both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, she has been successful in optimizing operations, enhancing profitability and creating new revenue streams. Judy has a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and a Masters degree in Healthcare Administration.

Larry Kidd, RN, CNAA

Duarte, Calif., June 7, 2005 - Larry R. Kidd, M.P.A., R.N., has joined City of Hope Cancer Center as vice president of Patient Care Services and chief nurse executive. An accomplished health care executive with significant experience in hospital operations and nursing leadership, Kidd will oversee patient care operations and services, including nursing, social services, community education, patient care, pastoral care and nursing research. Kidd will also have oversight of clinical coordination for City of Hope's new Helford Clinical Research Hospital, set to open this summer.

"Larry Kidd is a distinguished health care professional and is well regarded for his commitment to excellence in patient care," said James S. Miser, M.D., chief executive officer and chief medical officer, City of Hope National Medical Center. "His expertise and leadership will be vital to advancing City of Hope's clinical services and programs, and in ensuring the very highest standard of excellence."

Kidd is a former hospital operations improvement consultant for The Camden Group, a health care consulting and management firm. Kidd has also served as chief nurse executive, patient care leader and director of hospital operations at Kaiser Permanente, Los Angeles Medical Center, and prior to that, was chief nurse executive of Alameda County Medical Center.

Kidd began his career as a registered nurse in emergency, critical care and psychiatric services, providing direct patient care and management for major medical centers. He earned his Bachelor of Science in nursing from University of Alabama and a Master of Public Administration (MPA) in Health Services Administration from University of San Francisco.

Clarita G. Miraflor, RN, PhD, CHCQM

Dr. Miraflor's experience includes extensive teaching, leadership, and management responsibilities. She is a consultant for accreditation and licensing of health-care organizations, as well as a consultant for various managed care organizations. She is a university lecturer in healthcare management, a BRN CEU provider, and a speaker on the local, national, and international lecture circuits. She is a Diplomat of the American Board of Quality Assurance and Utilization Review Physicians (ABQAURP), and a member of Sigma Theta Tau, Inc./International Honor Society of Nursing. Dr. Miraflor receive d her PhD from Loyola University in Chicago Illinois.

Barbara Napper, MSN
Director of Nursing Program (retired)
Mt. San Antonio College

Barbara Napper retired from the Nursing Department at Mt. San Antonio College after 33 years of service. Prior to retirement, she served as the Director of the Nursing Program for 12 years. She has taught courses in the BSN focus for Cal State Dominguez Hills and the University of Phoenix. She is a volunteer tutor with high school students, is a member of the scholarship committee with the San Gabriel Valley Nursing Consortium, where is is currently secretary.

She is currently a consultant and has recently completed two major projects with the Community College Chancellors Office - Curriculum for NCLEX Review and a Curriculum Model for Associate Degree Nursing. She currently serves as co-Project Director for the Diversity Workforce Committee with California Institute for Nursing and Healthcare to investigate and develop a plan for increasing the diversity of nurses (service and education) in California. She also assists new nursing programs to develop feasibility studies, curriculum and through the approval process with the Board of Registered Nursing.
Rita Ostravich, RN, MSN
Rita is the director of nursing education at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center. She has worked for PVHMC for over thirty years.

Barbara Patton, EMBA, BSN, RN
Senior Vice President, Hospital Operations

Ms. Patton is a senior vice president at The Camden Group specializing in hospital operations, management, and nursing services. Over the past five years with The Camden Group, she has been involved with multiple turnarounds, provided interim management at the COO and CNO level, and conducted multiple hospital departmental operations improvement assessments. With over 30 years of health care leadership and management experience with progressive tertiary medical centers, she has implemented business plans, been responsible for new and existing product line development, fiscal planning and cost control initiatives, staffing, operations, patient care delivery and business process improvement.
Ms. Patton has held staff nurse, educator and nursing management positions in community and specialty hospitals throughout southern California. She has an extensive background in personnel development, physician relationships, conflict resolution, cost controls and system redesign. In her management positions she has served on numerous hospital, joint venture and foundation boards.
Ms. Patton received her bachelor's degree in nursing from California State College at Fresno and an Executive Master's Degree in Business Administration from Claremont Graduate School. In 1994, she completed a fellowship in Nursing Administration at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.
