College of Graduate Nursing Advisory BoardPurpose
The purpose of the Advisory Board is to consult with and advise the Dean of the College on matters relating to education, nursing and health care; provide feedback to the Dean on the College's level of achievement in meeting its stated goals and objectives; share information about the College's goals, plans and achievements with interested publics; and serve as a liaison between the College and the community in order to promote mutual understanding and cooperation.
Membership
- The Advisory Board consists of 15 to 25 members broadly representing all aspects of the nursing industry.
- Membership is at the invitation of the Dean.
- It is desirable to have some non-alumni members.
- Company representation is generally limited to one member per company, unless significantly different roles are represented, in which case two individuals may serve.
- The term of Board membership is 2 years with one reappointment possible.
Structure and Work
- The work of the Advisory Board focuses on national health care issues, how they impact the nursing industry, and the role the College of Graduate Nursing should play.
- Meetings are structured somewhat like a think tank. There is usually ample opportunity to contribute personal perspectives.
- Advisory Board members are asked from time to time to identify possible financial resources for specific projects and to be an advocate on behalf of the college.
Meetings
- The Advisory Board meets three times a year.
- Meetings are generally held at Western University of Health Sciences (Pomona, CA).
- Meetings are held on Wednesdays and start at 6:00 p.m. and adjourn by 8:00 p.m.

Jan Boller, PhD, RN
Professor and Director, ADN to MSN Program
College of Graduate Nursing
Western University of Health Sciences
Dr. Boller is Associate Professor and Director of the ADN to MSN Program. She has 15 years of experience as a critical care staff nurse, clinical educator, clinical nurse specialist, and was the Program Development Director at the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN), responsible for educational programming at AACN's National Teaching Institute and other national and international critical care education programs. Jan received her PhD in Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco, her Masters Degree in Nursing from California State University, Long Beach, a BS degree in Applied Sciences from Nebraska Wesleyan University, and a Diploma in Nursing from Immanuel Hospital School of Nursing in Omaha, Nebraska.
After receiving her PhD, Dr. Boller held positions as Director of Clinical Effectiveness for Sutter Solano Medical Center and St. Luke's Hospital in the San Francisco Bay Area. She was Assistant Professor at Samuel Merritt College School of Nursing. She is Project Director for the White Paper for Nursing Education Redesign for California, at the California Institute for Nursing & Health Care (CINHC). The White Paper on Nursing Education Redesign was funded by a grant from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Jan has also coordinated the Magic in Teaching Conferences for nurse educators, co-sponsored by the Board of Registered Nursing and CINHC, and funded in part by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. Jan is co-author of Daily Miracles: Stories and Practices of Humanity and Excellence in Health Care. (2006. Published by Sigma Theta Tau International). Daily Miracles received an AJN Book of the Year Award.
Suellen Crano, PhD
Retired, VP Strategic Planning

Dr. Crano served as Vice President for Strategic Planning and Institutional Effectiveness at Western University, until retiring in November, 2002 to battle cancer, a battle that she is currently winning. After earning her Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration/Student Personnel in 1984 from Michigan State University, Dr. Crano served in administrative roles at Texas A&M University, The The University of Arizona, the State of Michigan Department of Higher Management Systems, and Wyeth Laboratories, Inc. Dr. Crano currently serves on the advisory board of the East San Gabriel Valley Chapter of the American Cancer Society and on the governing board of Wired International, a non-profit humanitarian organization devoted to providing medical and healthcare information, education and communications resources to communities in developing and post-conflict regions, in addition to the Advisory Board for CGN. Dr. Crano also devotes time and effort helping cancer patients across the U.S. get quality medical and personal care.
Scott Helf, DO
Western University of Health Sciences
Scott Helf is a graduate of Western University, College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific class of 1999. He is currently the Director Medical Informatics and Educational Technology at Western University at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific. His interests include travel, history, learning foreign languages, video games, and playing with his dog. He views his participation on the Advisory Board as an important and effective means of promoting the use of technology in the education of health professionals.
Barbara Napper, MSN
Director of Nursing Program (retired)

Barbara Napper retired from the Nursing Department at Mt. San Antonio College after 33 years of service. Prior to retirement, she served as the Director of the Nursing Program for 12 years. She has taught courses in the BSN focus for Cal State Dominguez Hills and the University of Phoenix. She is a volunteer tutor with high school students, is a member of the scholarship committee with the San Gabriel Valley Nursing Consortium, where is is currently secretary.
She is currently a consultant and has recently completed two major projects with the Community College Chancellors Office - Curriculum for NCLEX Review and a Curriculum Model for Associate Degree Nursing. She currently serves as co-Project Director for the Diversity Workforce Committee with California Institute for Nursing and Healthcare to investigate and develop a plan for increasing the diversity of nurses (service and education) in California. She also assists new nursing programs to develop feasibility studies, curriculum and through the approval process with the Board of Registered Nursing.

Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Cardiac Surgery

Miriam Fulton currently practices at Pomona Valley Hospital Medical Center as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner in the cardiac surgery department. She has worked there for 29 years in the capacity of Staff Nurse, Nurse Educator, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Nurse Practitioner. She graduated from Loma Linda University with her MSN degree. She joins the advisory board to expand her current community service activities.

She provides operational leadership for the development, planning and management of Southern California Kaiser Foundation Hospitals/Health Plan patient care, nursing practice and allied health services. With 20 years of senior healthcare leadership experience in both for-profit and not-for-profit organizations, she has been successful in optimizing operations, enhancing profitability and creating new revenue streams. Judy has a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing and a Masters degree in Healthcare Administration.

Ms. Patton is a senior vice president at The Camden Group specializing in hospital operations, management, and nursing services. Over the past five years with The Camden Group, she has been involved with multiple turnarounds, provided interim management at the COO and CNO level, and conducted multiple hospital departmental operations improvement assessments. With over 30 years of health care leadership and management experience with progressive tertiary medical centers, she has implemented business plans, been responsible for new and existing product line development, fiscal planning and cost control initiatives, staffing, operations, patient care delivery and business process improvement.
Ms. Patton has held staff nurse, educator and nursing management positions in community and specialty hospitals throughout southern California. She has an extensive background in personnel development, physician relationships, conflict resolution, cost controls and system redesign. In her management positions she has served on numerous hospital, joint venture and foundation boards.
Ms. Patton received her bachelor's degree in nursing from California State College at Fresno and an Executive Master's Degree in Business Administration from Claremont Graduate School. In 1994, she completed a fellowship in Nursing Administration at the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.

She has served ACNL on various committees including chairing the Health Policy Committee and Board Member - South. Liz Aragon has been a Registered Nurse for over 25 years. She obtained her nursing degree from Mt. San Antonio College, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from the University of Phoenix and her Master of Health Administration from the University of LaVerne.
Liz is certified by the Board of Registered Nursing as a clinical instructor and has been on staff at Mt. San Antonio College Junior College and Chaffey College. Toni J. Sullivan, EdD, RN, FAAN
Nurse Educator (retired)
Dr. Sullivan's educational foundation in nursing began with a BSN from Seton Hall University, College of Nursing (1962), and was followed by advanced nursing education at Teachers College, Columbia University (EdM in 1974 and EdD in 1978), where she majored in baccalaureate and higher degree education in nursing and in community health nursing clinically. She began her nurse educator career as a Seton Hall Nursing Instructor in Foundations of Nursing, with a team of fine colleagues and under the mentorship of Dean Sister Agnes Reinkemeier. After completing doctoral education, Dr. Sullivan went on to start several academic nursing programs in several schools - GNP at SHU in collaboration with Lee Kleinman; BSN at Felician College; baccalaureate and several master degree programs at The University of Southern California; several masters programs including nurse midwifery, and a PhD in Nursing program at the University of Missouri-Columbia. All programs received NLN and AACN accreditation and their graduates have achieved with distinction. Dr. Sullivan's clinical expertise was tightly linked with her scholarship, which included self-care deficit nursing theory development and application in gerontology and in gerontology education, creation of new aging-in-place elder care practice, education, and living arrangement models, and design of collaborative education, practice, and research models for the health sciences. She has received a myriad of awards including Leadership Awards from Sigma Theta Tau, a Leadership Award from the Midwestern Nursing Research Society, a Hall of Fame Award from the SHU College of Nursing, and Outstanding Achievement in Nursing Practice and Nursing Education Awards from TC, Columbia University. Dr. Sullivan was elected to the American Academy of Nursing in 1989 and has published many books including Collaboration: A Health Care Imperative published by McGraw-Hill which received two AJN Book of the Year Awards. At present, Dr. Sullivan is busy with her beloved children, grandchildren and pets, community and political volunteer work, theater, bridge, and outings with her good friends, and tending to her riotous cottage garden.
Shirley Johnson, RN, MS, MBA

Shirley Johnson, R.N., M.S., M.B.A., chief nursing and patient services officer, guides the strategic direction of nursing and patient-care services and leads City of Hope s efforts to continually enhance care provided to patients, giving special attention to the humanistic aspects of medicine.
Johnson joined City of Hope from Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, where she was executive director of Siteman Cancer Center. She was responsible for the strategic direction of the cancer center s clinical programming initiatives. During her tenure with Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Johnson accomplished a variety of improvements, including the planning of a 24-hour outpatient oncology clinic and assistance with the planning of an offsite facility for medical oncology and radiation oncology. She also expanded the inpatient cancer program from a 16-bed bone marrow transplant unit to a 166-bed entity with 420 full-time employees and an operating budget of $32 million.
Johnson is president of the Association of Cancer Executives and chair of the BMT Program Administrator s Steering Committee for the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation. She recently completed a six-year term on the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons and was a member of its Program on Approvals Committee.
Johnson received her Master of Business Administration degree, Master of Science degree in management and bachelor s degree in nursing from Maryville University in St. Louis.
