Dr. Harkless is known for his work in the entire spectrum of diabetic foot and lower extremity amputation prevention. He is currently the Founding Dean of the College of Podiatric Medicine and Professor of Podiatric Medicine and Surgery Western University of Health Sciences, Pomona, CA. His most significant contribution has been his leadership and passion in the integration of podiatric medicine in an academic health science center earning the respect and admiration of his physician colleagues. Dr. Harkless is a retired Professor of Orthopedics at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio (UTHSCSA) where he served for 30 years. He has been recognized by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) and the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (UTHSCSA) as an Outstanding Educator receiving the ADA Educator of the Year and the Presidential Excellence in Teaching Award, respectively. Over the course of his 30-year career, he has trained over 1000 students, 176 residents and15 fellows, solidifying his status as one of the profession's best educators.
He pioneered the TEAM approach to Diabetic Foot Care when he developed the nationally and internationally known seminar, "The Diabetic Foot - A Multidisciplinary Approach" in 1985 which has educated over 7,000 health care providers. His leadership in Diabetes was recognized when he was appointed to the Texas Diabetes Council (TDC) by then Governor George Bush in 1995. He was appointed chair of the (TDC) by Governor Perry in 2001 serving through June 2007. The Texas Diabetes Institute honored his contributions to community service through education by placing him on the Wall of Honor in 2003. Moreover he was a member of the team who developed the University of Texas Wound and Risk Classification Systems which are the clinical pathways for wounds and preventative treatment of the Diabetic Foot.
He is recognized nationally and internationally for his scientific and scholarly contributions serving on editorial boards and scientific advisory panels for academia, industry, and government (VA, HHS, CDC). He has served on scientific review panels for NIH and ADA. Moreover, he has edited textbooks and has published more than 150 peer reviewed articles, abstracts and book chapters.
In Keeping with his belief that mind, body and spirit all contribute to health and well being, Dr. Harkless notes that his favorite passage in Scripture is Matthew 7:7, "Ask and it shall be given, seek and ye shall find, knock and the door will be opened unto you."
