I can help you with: I am here to help students with their transition into their doctorate program. I will provide all the details you need to know so that when you start your first day of class you'll know exactly where you should be and what you should be doing. During the academic year, I am here to assist you with any problems, both personal and academic, that you might encounter. I am a resource for any questions you might have about anything, if I don't know the answer, I can find out or point you in the right direction. Above all else, I am here to help you succeed in the pharmacy program.

Favorite part of the job: Students make my job exciting! No two days are ever the same because the students come into my office with different issues or problems to deal with or solve. I also like those days when they come to my office just to say hi, talk about what going on in their lives, or we just have a good laugh over something.

Best advice: JUST RELAX!!! I know you have a lot of excitement and anxiety about starting your graduate degree. Just remember we want to see you do well just as much as you do. We're here to help and we'll do everything we can to help you succeed.

John Tegzes, MA, VMD, DABVT
Director, Year 1 Curriculum
Professor, Toxicology
College of Veterinary Medicine
909-469-5652
jtegzes@westernu.edu

I can help with: As the Director of the First Year of the Veterinary Curriculum, I can help you with all your curriculum needs. This includes Orientation and Welcome Week, preparing you for success in our PBL curriculum, and guidance with all facets of the curriculum. I can help you with understanding your daily academic schedule, tell you where to find the laboratories and classrooms, and show you how to find a content expert in Anatomy (or any other discipline). Our curriculum may seem a bit unstructured to those of you coming from traditional didactic undergraduate universities, but it actually has quite a bit of structure and organization. You are always welcome to visit me in my office, or to send me a quick email, if I can ever be of assistance. As the summer progresses, you will be receiving important information from me regarding Orientation and Welcome Week. During orientation week, we will introduce you to the skills that are important to develop in order to ensure your success in your education and in your career.

Favorite part of the job: I really love interacting with students, who more correctly, are my new colleagues. The Veterinary Profession is an amazing healthcare career, and I really enjoy working with students, and seeing their transformation into the professionals that they become as a result of our curriculum.

Best advice: The adjustment to a PBL curriculum can be challenging. To ease your transition into becoming a student-centered learner, it would be very wise to buy and read this book before you arrive on campus in August: Navigating Problem-Based Learning, by Samy Azer, published by Elsevier (ISBN 978-0-7295-3827-5).

Michelle Emmert
Director of University Student Relations
909-469-5616
memmert@westernu.edu

I can help you with: I can help you with questions related to the Student Government Association, WesternU Clubs and student-led club events. My staff can also assist with health insurance, fitness membership benefits, housing website, and Metrolink discount questions.

Favorite part of the job: Being surrounded by intelligent, compassionate and energized students all day! I also enjoy helping student leaders continue to develop their leadership skills as they coordinate events and uphold the responsibilities of their positions.

Best advice: Academics always come first, but be sure to also take a little time each week to keep your relationships strong, you body healthy, and your cultural/spiritual lives active. As a health professional it's important to maintain a healthy balance and I encourage you to start now as a student. Also, bookmark the forms page: you'll need it if you're even a little involved with club activities.
