Health Insurance

Students enrolled full-time at Western University of Health Sciences must maintain a health insurance policy for the duration of their education. Proof of such coverage is required at the time of registration for each academic year.

All students are encouraged to "shop around" for their own insurance coverage. Please be cautious and make sure the plan you purchase is right for you. Many students are enrolled in plans offered by Blue Cross, Kaiser Permanente, HealthNet, PacifiCare, Aetna US Healthcare and United Healthcare. There are many companies out there that can give you the coverage you need for your specific health concerns.

Health insurance is also available through the University at a reasonable cost. All students are automatically enrolled in this plan, and they have a 30-day grace period from the date of registration to complete an insurance waiver form and forward proof of alternative insurance coverage to the Office of Student Affairs. Once satisfactory proof has been received, the insurance charges for the University plan are reversed. There will be no refunds or fees reversed after the 30-day grace period. No exceptions!

Under the current University insurance plan, students have access to a network of healthcare providers. Listed below are some of the additional features of this plan.
  • Cost of Premium: $1063 (basic), $1238- ISAC & SMSPP Programs

  • Deductible: $150 per plan year (one-time deductible)

  • Maximum benefit for each injury or illness: $50,000

  • Benefits paid after deductible: 80% for in-network providers; 60% for out-of-network providers

  • Prescriptions: Present you Express Scripts card to the pharmacy with your prescription and pay only the co-payment amount. No more paying in full for the prescription up front. Co-payment amounts are as follows: $20(generic) and $25 (single-source or multi-source name brand).
