Upon graduation from Davis in 1982, I entered private practice in the Central Valley of California at Lander Veterinary Clinic. This practice was an ambulatory food animal practice, primarily dairy, of 15 veterinarians. I practiced there for 24 years, was a partner for 16 years, and the practice manager for four years. During the last nine years, I also volunteered as an offensive line coach at the local Community College.
In July of 2006, I resigned to join the faculty at Western University of Health Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine. I have always enjoyed coaching and educating and desired to do so at the professional level. At the College of Veterinary Medicine, I co-coordinate the Veterinary Clinical Skills course and the Veterinary Practice Management course. I also aid in the delivery of content in the Food and Feed Safety course and act as a content expert in Food Animal internal medicine, reproduction and nutrition.

Personal Teaching Philosophy
I've never really regarded myself as a teacher as much as I've regarded myself as an educator. The difference is subtle yet profound. Teachers deliver information to the student and expect learning to occur. Educators place the student into an environment where they see the need for learning and seek the information that they feel will meet that need. The educator can act as a resource or can act as a director, pointing the student in the right direction. The educator can also model the knowledge and allow the student to assimilate that which they need. This was my approach while mentoring students while in clinical practice, while I delivered the Anatomy and Physiology course to RVT students at Modesto Junior College and while coaching football at the same institution.
