The DVM Curriculum
The curriculum for the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine is divided into phases. For an overview of these phases, select Overview and Timeline. For estimates on the time needed to complete the program, select Student Time Commitments.
Phase I (Years 1 & 2) The first two years of the curriculum will emphasize the basic sciences as they apply to veterinary medicine. Students will also be introduced to veterinary clinical practice and will be responsible for mastering designated clinical skills prior to completion of phase I. For more details go here. Phase II (Year 3) This year will be dedicated to bridging the gap between the knowledge of veterinary medicine and the application of veterinary medicine. Student will assume the role of "apprentice veterinarian" with increasing responsibility; they will be actively involved in the problem-solving necessary to successfully manage medical issues. Fine-tuning of clinical skills will occur through observation of and interaction with large caseloads. For more details go here. Phase III (Year 4) The fourth year of the curriculum will allow a student to further the "apprentice" role in select areas of veterinary medicine important to their chosen career direction. The independent thesis option is a unique opportunity for a student to work closely with a research mentor toward the goal of completion and documentation of a funded research project.
