Message from the Dean
Announcing Dr. Morishita's appointment as Associate Dean
Welcome to the Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine website. I hope you find this site informative, resourceful, and reflective of the programs and accomplishments of our faculty, students, and staff. We appreciate your interest and welcome your comments regarding the information on our website.
I am extremely fortunate to lead a distinguished faculty who are dedicated to their students and to the veterinary profession. They are dynamic professional leaders, supported by an equally professional staff. Their commitment to student development provides the distinguishing spark that fuels our programmatic efforts.
The College has three Founding Principles:
- We are committed to Student Centered Learning. We are here to guide students along the path of professional development that prepares them for a career in veterinary medicine. It is our fervent hope, our deepest desire, and our firm intention that they become familiar with the science of discovery.
- We hope to enhance their training through expanded opportunities provided by strategic partnerships between the College of Veterinary Medicine and representatives of many of the numerous purveyors of veterinary services in different fields of study.
- We are committed to a Reverence for Life philosophy that guides our decisions in designing and delivering the curriculum. It is our goal to avoid harming or killing animals in the process of training ethically competent veterinarians.

The College opened in 2003, the first new college of veterinary medicine in the United States in 20 years. The founders of this college had a unique opportunity to selectively integrate and build upon the best that veterinary medical education had to offer in the 20th century. Computers, like the one you are using to read these words, and the ability to instantaneously retrieve information via the Internet, has drastically restructured the landscape of information management. Today, veterinarians must be lifelong learners as well as information managers. We are guardians of public health in an age of bio-terrorism; protectors of the nation s food supply in an unprecedented era of developing natural and man-made threats; and health care providers for the pet members of our families in a time when society demonstrates an ever increasing appreciation for the contributions of our animal companions.
The profession of veterinary medicine has never been more important, more exciting, or more promising as a satisfying professional career.
Western University of Health Sciences, a 5-college campus with a wide range of professional health care programs and interprofessional learning opportunities, offers a distinctive educational experience.
Thank you for your interest in the College of Veterinary Medicine, and I hope to see you here.
