CVM Research Overview

Historically, Western University of Health Sciences (founded in 1978) has been known for its innovating approach to teaching of health care professionals, but not for it contribution to research. In January of 2005, the President and the University's senior management team engaged the University's Board of Trustees, faculty, and many members of the campus community in the creation of a 10 year strategic plan. One of the three key strategic elements of the plan is: The University will transition from a "knowledge-disseminator" to a "knowledge-producer" through an expanded emphasis on research and scholarship in the health sciences. Thus, was born a new research emphasis at Western University of Health Sciences and the CVM is committed to contribute to this effort.

OVERARCHING GOAL FOR RESEARCH AT THE CVM

Over the next five years, the College of Veterinary Medicine, Western University of Health Sciences will continue to strengthen its research, scholarship, and creative activity to the extent that it will be recognized not only as an outstanding teaching college, but also as an emerging veterinary research institution.

CURRENT PROGRAMS OF RESEARCH EMPHASIS

The CVM recognizes that for any research program, but particularly for a newly established program, it is important to have a critical mass of investigators in a given field of interest. A critical mass in a particular field of study allows a small program to be more competitive and more efficient, by enhancing the cross fertilization and sharing of ideas, applying for collaborative grants, sharing of equipment/space, and providing the number of faculty necessary to train graduate students in a scientific discipline. Although the CVM faculty conducts and has research interests in many different disciplines, a few stand out as areas of emphasis and strength:

  • Infectious disease
  • Epidemiology/public health
  • Curricular outcome assessment research

Additionally we plan to develop two new areas of research emphasis:
  • Zoonotic/emerging disease and bioterrorism
  • Comparative Functional genomics
