Don\u2019t panic!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you experience a needlestick, sharps injury, or contact with blood\/OPIM (other potentially infectious materials), <strong>act immediately<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Wash the area right away.<\/strong> For skin exposures, wash thoroughly with soap and water. For eyes, nose, or mouth, flush with water or saline for at least 15 minutes. Do not squeeze or scrub the wound aggressively.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Write down the following information for \u201csource\u201d patient:<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Name<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Hospital\/Clinic number<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Date of birth<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Patient location<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Report the exposure immediately<\/strong> to your supervisor or clinical preceptor and follow their instructions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Seek medical evaluation right away.<\/strong> Timing matters: PEP is most effective when started as soon as possible, ideally within hours.\n<ul>\n<li><strong>For on-campus exposures<\/strong>, contact <a href=\"mailto:stu-emphealth@westernu.edu\">Student-Employee Health Office (SEHO)<\/a> for post-exposure evaluation, which may include baseline testing and consideration of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP).<\/li>\n<li><strong>For off-campus exposures, <\/strong>nearest hospital\u2019s emergency department or urgent care for immediate evaluation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Complete the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/webapp.westernu.edu\/incident_report\/\">WesternU Incident Report<\/a><\/strong> documenting how the exposure occurred, the source individual (if known), and the body substance involved.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Follow up as directed.<\/strong> Your provider will advise on any follow-up testing schedule and next steps.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>Remember:<\/strong> Every exposure, no matter how minor it seems, should be reported.
