Building Connections to Improve Health<\/h2>\n

At the WesternU College of Graduate Nursing, we make a difference in the lives of students, patients, individuals, and communities locally and worldwide. We provide the knowledge and the one-on-one patient care to improve the health in the communities we serve. \n\t\t\t\t\tCooking up Change<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPomona’s First Outdoor Community Kitchen<\/span>\n\t\t\t<\/h2>\n\t\t\t
At Lopez Urban Farm, the students joined a long-standing movement led by local farmers, community advocates, and families who have worked for years to maintain consistent access to foods that improve health outcomes and reduce susceptibility to diet-related chronic conditions. Together, they explored what it means to advance food sovereignty, whereby communities have the right to access healthy, nutritious, and culturally meaningful food that is produced sustainably and aligned with ecological principles.

\r\nFor students, this work represented an opportunity to participate in a movement that can dismantle food swamps, expand access to nutrient-dense foods, and strengthen the conditions that enable families to thrive.<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t

“Bolivia\u2019s health care system stands out for its use of traditional healing practices alongside modern medicine. Clinical experiences were supplemented with case studies and guest lectures to provide students with a well-rounded understanding of health care in the context of Bolivian culture. Suddenly it became clearer why Bolivia was recognized as a pioneer of universal health care. The Bolivians have a robust culture and history of social justice, civic engagement, indigenous rights, and overarching human rights.”<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t
