IACUC Policies
Western University of Health Sciences (WesternU) is committed to the principle stated in the Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals that “all who care for, use, or produce animals for research, testing, or teaching must assume responsibility for their well-being”. The following policies support this philosophy by setting minimal standards for the use of vertebrate animals in these activities. These policies conform to various federal laws, regulations and guidelines that have become accepted as standards for animal care and have been vetted and approved by the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and are supported by the Vice President for Research and Biotechnology who is the Institutional Official (IO) to whom the IACUC reports.
WesternU’s Institutional Veterinarian oversees the use of all vertebrate animals in research and teaching at the Pomona and Lebanon campuses and serves as the Attending Veterinarian (AV) for the Pomona campus. The Lebanon campus has its own AV who reports to the Institutional Veterinarian who, in turn, reports to the IO. The IACUC also reports to the IO. The AVs for both campuses are voting members of the IACUC.
