What CVM alumni are doing, five years after graduation

Members of the graduating class of 2011 have accomplished a lot in the five years since their studies ended at WesternU’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

Ten alumni returned to the Pomona, Calif. campus on Oct. 15 to celebrate their accomplishments, reconnect with favorite faculty members and talk about
how much their training contributed to their success. The 50 attendees in the transformed
Atrium of the Veterinary Clinical Center included several members of the faculty and staff as
well as few students in their first and second years.

Dean Phillip Nelson, DVM, PhD., welcomed the former
students.

“The veterinary college was an ambitious undertaking They really are
under a dark cloud,” Dean Nelson said, referring to the preparing you for
global economic downturn that occurred when the
students began their studies in 2007. the real world.

“You graduated at the edge of the recession, yet 93 percent – Meredith May, DVM
had a job at the time of graduation, and 99 percent had a
job within a year later,” the dean said. “The only reason

that it wasn’t 100 percent was because one graduate wanted
to take some time off.
“Because of your accomplishments, we are successful,” he said. Pointing out the Year 1 and 2
students in the room, he said, “We urge you to create opportunities for them, just as others
created opportunities for you.”

Meredith May, DVM, representing the class of 2011, said the CVM graduates “are all practicing
together for a better human/animal bond.

“Reverence for life is huge,” Dr. May added. She told the students to pay attention to their
instructors.
“They really are preparing you for the real world.”

CLASS OF 2011 HIGHLIGHTS
The Class of 2011 has 94 members -- 71 women and 23 men.

Before enrolling at CVM, some students had some unusual jobs. One was a dolphin trainer, another a surf shop manager. A third was an
entertainment industry publicist and another was a systems manager.

The commencement speaker was Nicholas Trout, MA, VETMB, DACVS, DECVS, a veterinarian trained in Britain, as well as an author.

The 2011 graduates were among the first to take a newly revised American Veterinary Medicine Association’s Veterinarian’s Oath. The change
identified animal welfare as a priority of the veterinary profession, as well as animal health.
