Newest veterinarians are charged

to meet challenges and find joy

T he College of Veterinary Medicine celebrated 106 new
graduates at its Commencement ceremony for the
Class of 2017 on May 18, 2017, in Pasadena, Calif.
Keynote speaker Justine Lee, DVM, founder and CEO of
podcast and webinar service VETgirl, shared lessons from her
20 years of practicing veterinary medicine, among them: work
hard, find good mentorship, and continue lifelong learning.

Also, she said, learn from your mistakes and be on guard for
signs of anxiety, depression, frustration and lack of self-
confidence, feelings that can lead to the “imposter
syndrome,” which is when you believe your success is
somehow undeserved.
“Know that you have worked hard, studied hard, and
achieved so much in these past four years,” she told the
graduates. “You have value and expertise that you can bring
to your new job.
“Now, take control of your life and seize the opportunity to
be successful and joyful.”
