Welcome to the Harriet K. & Philip Pumerantz Library Distance Education information web page for students, faculty, staff, and researchers. The library has a goal of providing the same or similar level of resources and services to those learning, teaching, working, or researching off-campus. Although you may not be able to physically get to the Pumerantz Library, you can still access books, journals, and other media either by requesting to have them delivered to you electronically or having them mailed to you. Please take your time and review this information to help you get to know the library and how it can make your life a little bit easier.

Remote Access

When accessing the electronic resources off-campus, links to restricted materials on the library website will prompt you for your WesternU network username and password. This username and password is the same as your WesternU email. Only authorized users (current students, faculty, and staff) can access the library materials.

Students at the Lebanon campus will be required to provide their WesternU network username and password for authentication when using electronic resources.

Requesting Materials

You may request book chapters and journal articles from our collection through our Document Delivery services. If you find an article, book or book chapters that is not in our collection but would like to request a copy of it, Interlibrary Loan requests are also available. Requesting materials from either Document Delivery or InterLibrary Loan is done through ILLiad.

  • Go to the ILLiad log in page.
  • Sign in with your WesternU email username and password.
  • The first time you sign in you will be asked to register.
  • To submit requests select the “Article”, “Book” or “Book Chapter” link from the menu on the left.
  • Fill out as much information as you can and then click on the “Submit Request” button.
  • Document Deliveries can take up to 48 hours and InterLibrary Loans generally take a week.
  • We do not accept rush requests.
  • An email will be sent to your WesternU account when the materials are available with instructions on how to retrieve them.
  • To comply with record-keeping requirements of Copyright law, an item posted in ILLiad is kept for only 30 days and then is automatically deleted.

InterLibrary Loan

If there is an article that the library does not have electronically or in print, you can submit a request to get it from another library.

  • Students can request up to 25 interlibrary loans for free each academic year, $5 per item thereafter.
  • Please submit only 5 requests at a time.

Document Delivery

If there is an article or book chapter that the library has in its print collection, you can submit a request to have it scanned for you.

  • There is no limit to the number of articles you can request each academic year.
  • Please submit only 5 requests at a time.

  • There is no charge for this service.

Requesting Books

Students enrolled in distance education programs or who are on rotations may request books that are available to check out at the Harriet K. & Philip Pumerantz Library.

First and second year students on the Lebanon Campus may return books or other library materials through the Lebanon Campus bookstore at no charge to the student.

    • The Library mails the books to students on rotations at no charge.
    • Students are responsible for the cost of return postage.
    • Books are generally sent out within 48 hours via UPS.
    • There is a limit of two items.
    • Distance and rotation students have a six week checkout with one renewal.
    • Items returned late will be charged a $.25 late fee per day.


Renewing Items Online

  • Visit the library’s Online Catalog and click on “My Account”.
  • Click “Renew My Materials”.
  • Enter you username and password (same as your WesternU email).  If you have a library PIN, you can continue using that as your password along with your ID badge number.
  • Click “List Charged Items”.
  • If you want to renew all material on your account select the radio button “Renew all”.
  • If you want to renew selected material click the radio button “Renew selected items” then click check marks next to the material you would like to renew.
  • Click “Renew selected items”. A summary page will let you know if your renewals were successful.
  • An item may not be renewed if there is a wait list for the item or you have exceeded your renewal limit.
  • If your items do not renew successfully please call the circulation desk during library open hours.

Overdue Information

If items checked out on your library card are not turned in on or before the scheduled due date, they are considered to be overdue and charges will be accrued on your library account.

  • Charges on overdue items are $.25 per day.
  • Reserve material is $1.00 for each hour item is overdue.
  • Patrons will have their borrowing privileges suspended when their fines exceed a stipulated block amount.
  • Courtesy notices on overdue materials will be sent out weekly for 3 weeks as a reminder to return material.
  • After the third overdue notice the item will be marked lost, and a bill will be sent to the current address in the University system for the price of the item plus a $30.00 processing fee for each item.
