Honoring Juneteenth: A Reflection on Freedom, Progress, and Our Shared Commitment to Humanism
President’s Office
June 19, 2026
Dear WesternU Community,
Today, we join communities across our nation in commemorating Juneteenth, a day of profound historical significance that marks the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States.
Observed annually on June 19, Juneteenth recognizes the day in 1865 when news of freedom finally reached enslaved individuals in Galveston, Texas, more than two years after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. While this day celebrates the end of one of the darkest chapters in American history, it also serves as a powerful reminder that the pursuit of equality, opportunity, and justice is an ongoing journey that requires continual reflection, learning, and action.
As an institution dedicated to educating future healthcare professionals and advancing the well-being of our communities, Western University of Health Sciences is grounded in the values of humanism, compassion, respect, and service. Juneteenth provides an opportunity to reaffirm these values and to recognize the importance of creating environments where every individual is valued, respected, and empowered to thrive.
This observance invites us not only to reflect on the sacrifices, resilience, and achievements of generations who persevered in the face of injustice, but also to celebrate the countless contributions of Black Americans whose leadership, innovation, scholarship, and service have enriched our nation and strengthened our communities. Their impact can be seen across every sector of society, including healthcare, education, science, public service, business, and the arts.
At WesternU, our mission calls upon us to prepare graduates who serve diverse populations with empathy, cultural humility, and an unwavering commitment to improving the human condition. The lessons of Juneteenth remind us that meaningful progress is achieved when we listen, learn, and work together to build communities rooted in dignity, opportunity, and mutual respect.
As we honor this important day, I encourage each member of our community to take time to reflect on our shared history, engage in meaningful dialogue, and consider how we can continue to advance understanding, compassion, and humanism in our daily lives and professional endeavors.
On behalf of the University, I extend my gratitude to all members of our WesternU family who contribute to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment where individuals from all backgrounds can learn, work, and succeed.
May this Juneteenth serve as both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of our collective responsibility to uphold the values of equity, respect, and service that strengthen our institution and the communities we are privileged to serve.
