WesternU Disbursements and Loan Cancellation Information

Federal Direct Loan Disbursements

WesternU students who have completed all registration and financial aid requirements, are in good academic standing, have no holds on their student account, and are enrolled full‑time are eligible for financial aid disbursement(s) based on the amount borrowed. Students may view their disbursement information through the WesternU Student Portal.

Financial aid does not disburse directly to a student’s bank account. All federal and institutional aid is first applied to the student account to pay tuition and fees. If a credit balance remains after institutional charges are satisfied, the Bursar’s Office will issue the refund to the student’s bank account via EFT on the scheduled refund date.

Loan disbursement dates vary by program and are based on each program’s enrollment period. Federal regulations require all federal aid to be divided into equal payments for the award year. Disbursement dates apply only to students who have completed all financial aid and registration requirements as requested by the designated offices.

Students with a hold or missing requirements on their account will not receive funds on their scheduled disbursement date. Once the hold is resolved, funds will be disbursed to the students account.

Federal Direct Loan Returns

Students have the option to cancel all or part of their federal loan(s) within 14 days of disbursement. For cancellations after the 14 days please contact the loan servicer for assistance.

If federal loan funds are returned to the U.S. Department of Education (ED) within 14 days of the disbursement to the University, interest and/or loan fees that were assessed may be waived. For questions regarding returning federal loan funds, please speak with a financial aid counselor or contact us at finaid@westernu.edu.

Private Loan Returns

WesternU does not return private loan funds to private lenders. Any cancellation of a private loan must be completed directly by the student with their lender. Students should contact their private loan lender to return the funds according to the lender’s policies and timelines.
