Student Organization and Club branding

We encourage student organizations to design a distinctive logo that is meaningful and memorable, while recognizing your affiliation with WesternU.

The student organization or club name should be included in the artwork. The University name, logo or wordmark is optional and must be clearly separated from the club or organization name. Avoid creating artwork that appears to be a new or redesigned University, College or program logo.

The WesternU logo, name, seal, and wordmarks are the property of Western University of Health Sciences. Any unauthorized use or misuse is prohibited.

Approval is required for ALL student organization or club designs, whether or not the WesternU name, wordmark or logo is used in the artwork. Final approval is only granted by University Student Affairs. Please refer to the Student Leader Handbook for the approval process.

Please Note:

  • Design approvals are only valid for the academic year. University brand standards may change and prior designs need to be resubmitted for approval.
  • If applicable, ensure a design is approved by the organization’s national or regional group before submitting to University Student Affairs.
  • Have the artwork approved before any work is done by a vendor. The artwork will not be approved simply because money has already been spent.

Requirements

  • Any use of the University name must be either the entire official name “Western University of Health Sciences” or the brand mark “WesternU”—please note that “U” is capitalized and no space. Use of Western, Western University, WU, WUHS or other variations will not be approved.
  • When promoting your student organization through digital, print or merchandise applications, you may use WesternU trademarks. However, trademarks cannot be joined with the club’s name to form a new mark.
  • If typesetting the University name, student organizations do not have to use the official University fonts, however a professional and legible typeface—either serif (ex. Times New Roman) or san serif (ex. Avenir)—should be used. The University name should not be:
    • All caps
    • A script or decorative typeface
    • Stylized, stretched, warped, or on a curve
    • Added to an icon or graphic in such a way as to suggest a new University, College or program logo.
  • Do not allow the University logo or wordmark to appear blurry or pixelated. High resolution raster and vector logos are available for download.
  • Do not alter the University logo or wordmark by rotating, stretching, adding or removing elements, recreating, changing the colors, or rendering in 3-D.
  • The only acceptable colors for the University logo or wordmark are all black, all white, or all burgundy. Choose the appropriate color so that the University name or logo remains legible (ex. a white logo on a dark background).
  • Do not embed the University logo or wordmark within another image.
  • Do not place text or graphics over the logo or wordmark.

WesternU Public Affairs & Marketing maintains the right to approve, alter, or adjust brand guidelines for specific uses. Approval of an exception does not apply outside of the approved use. Public Affairs & Marketing has the responsibility of respectfully intercepting any misuses of WesternU branding. We will make suggestions or supply revised designs.

Merchandise And Apparel

If a student organization or club is creating a design for merchandise or apparel, Student Affairs will submit your design to the Campus Store for review prior to approval. University or College names or logos used as a standalone design (i.e., no other club design featured on the item) is prohibited, with very limited exceptions.

A vendor’s inability to reproduce the University or College logo will not result in a modification of the logo. The WesternU Campus Store can help with approved vendors that will ensure a quality product.

Reminders:

  • Do not use copyrighted or trademarked images, characters, phrases, mottos or logos.
  • Do not use the University name or logo on copyright protected materials. Contact University Student Affairs for assistance.
  • If using an external organization’s logo or artwork, approval from that organization is required.
  • If your club is nationally recognized, you may use its student chapter logo. Please note that most organizations have dedicated logos specific to student chapters which may differ from the parent organization’s logo. This information usually can be found on the organization’s main website.
  • Submit to University Student Affairs before any vendor work. The design will not be approved simply because money has already been spent.
